  19TH C. GERMAN CANDLE HOLDERS AWARDED FOR BICYCLE RACEA pair of 19th c. German brass candle holders weighted with white metal, each with an engraved cursive inscription near the base that reads "Preis?Tandemfahren?Neumuster?15.5.1898". Each measures 10.5 inches high. The inscription indicates that the pair was given as an award in an 1898 tandem bicycle race in Neumunster, Germany. Tandem bicycles were invented just seven years prior, in 1891. Condition Very good condition. One candle rocks a little bit on a level surface.?

The column rests atop a tripod clawfoot brass base which additionally attaches to a three-sided malachite base. Unmarked. Each, height: 11 1/2 in x width: 4 1/2 in x depth: 4 1/2 in. Condition: The candlesticks show signs of light wear throughout consistent with age and use. There are a few minute chips to the malachite bases. Wear along the underside. Each has small round felt tabs affixed to the underside. The top round brass candlestick holders are slightly misshapen and are not perfectly round. Light scratching throughout.
