Intended to hold flowers, fruit or teacakes, baskets such as this are often called "bride's baskets" owing to their popularity in the 1870's and 1880's as wedding presents to newlyweds. The iconography here - the hand, symbolic of marriage, the rosebud, symbolic of romance, and the trailing vines, symbolic of union - leaves little doubt as to its original sentiment.
