Bridget Riley is an English painter known for her op art paintings. In 1959, Riley met painter and art educator Maurice de Sausmarez at a residential summer school that he ran with Harry and Diane Thubron. Sausmarez became her friend and mentor, inspiring her to look closer at Futurism and Divisionism and artists such as Klee and Seurat. Riley began to develop her signature Op Art style consisting of black and white geometric patterns that explore the dynamism of sight and produce a disorienting effect on the eye and produces movement and color.

Bridget Riley (British b. 1931) "Nineteen Grays" 1968 silkscreen on board from an edition of 75 this being numbered 5 in pencil lower left signed and dated lower right. Unframed. Paper size apprx. 29-7/8" x 29-7/8". Printing 19 Greys was a challenge...involving three printers at Kelpra working on the project for a whole year. This was due to the incredible number of proofings involved approximately 500 had to be printed in order to obtain a perfect edition of 75 artist's proofs...Up to nineteen shades of grey were used in the prints with the powdery bloom of the inks producing just the right formulation of 'grey' needed to produce the contrasting effects of cold and warm and light and dark. Print articles about the artist accompany the lot.

Housed in a custom made Guido (Boston) frame, 19 1/2" x 23 1/4". Good condition, has not been removed from the frame. Provenance: Swann Auction Galleries, 10/27/2010, hammer price $1, 100. MARGARET BRISBINE (1901-1991)
MARGARET BRISBINE (1901-1991) BENTON FAMILY PORTRAITMargaret Brisbine (1901-1991)Portrait of Rita and T.P. Benton (1934)The oil on canvas portrait is signed by Margaret Brisbine lower left and dated 1934.This painting was acquired directly from the family trust through Jessie Benton. It had been commissioned by Thomas Hart Benton in the early 30s, a time when both Benton and Margaret Brisbane lived in New York. It was exhibited at the The Manor Club of Pelham in New York where a reviewer described it as, ''Mrs. Thomas Benton, wife of a noted artist, and ''T. P. '' a delightful little boy with unruly curls.''Margaret Brisbine (alternate spelling Margaret Brisbane) was an illustrator, muralist and easel painter born in North Dakota. She is mostly associated with New York and, though also to some degree, Texas. She studied at the Rice Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and possibly with Benton in New York which could explain the impetus for this commission. Her works have been widely exhibited.Measures 36 x 30 inches.Very good professionally restored condition, scattered touches of professional inpainting touch-up as shown in the images under UV light online.Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist's estate.
