Roland Batchelor (1889-1990) three watercolours Old Town Nice; Market scene and man beside a bridge together with a pen and ink of figures going to market largest 12.75 x 10in. Unframed Estimate ?200-300 Old Town Nice street scene with possibly slightly discoloured paper and has been laid down onto card a few tiny dirt specks but otherwise fair. Market scene in good condition slightly unevenly cropped a pencil sketch verso. Figures going to church - paper evently discoloured with a few small dirt specks and one whited our correction just beneath the womans foot. Foxing on the back but not coming through to the front yet. Man beside bridge again slightly unevenly cropped but otherwise in fair condition. A British country genre scene depicting two young mothers in 19th c. English landscape with a Tudor cottage behind. Their children are gathered around them at stream's edge as one young boy tries to piece together a pottery jug his brother broke. His sisters are disdainful or forgiving, the tension is broken by the dog begging for the baby's treat and the gossips in a nearby doorway. Housed in a gold acanthus leaf deep cove frame with dusty rose velvet liner, OS: 45 1/2" x 38", SS: 35 1/2" x 27 1/2", cleaned and relined, overall light craquelure, stretcher impression, spots lower right.
