JAPANESE BRONZE RECTANGULAR CENSER ,MEIJI PERIOD A large Japanese bronze rectangular censer, dating from the Meiji period. The large square censer supported by four small rounded feet. Each side has panel with a creature like a dragon, lion,. Each angled corner features a fierce creature head roaring with open mouth. A band of Japanese characters adorn the area below the rim. A circular medallion shape seal on base within a square.

Its body heavily carved with birds motif and its reticulated lid with floral relief decorations. This censer is designed with a three legged base that is further embellished with dragon heads motifs. The head and mane comprise the cover of this censer. Censer conveys an overall impression of power and fierceness, with the open mouth bellowing the smoke once the censer is used.
