ROMANO-EGYPTIAN TERRACOTTA BUST
ROMANO-EGYPTIAN TERRACOTTA BUST OF MINERVA**First Time At Auction**
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful pottery bust of Minerva - Greek Athena - the Roman goddess of war and wisdom, crowned by her signature Corinthian helmet with an annular shield featured at her left shoulder. The billowing folds of a toga drape her chest, falling beneath her fleshy neck, as she gazes forth from deep-set eyes above a narrow nose, full cheeks, and a petite smile. Her braided coiffure is pushed behind her ears and falls gently to her sloped shoulders. Minerva was the Roman interpretation of the Greek goddess Athena; the Romans did not stress her warrior aspects, but instead her wisdom and knowledge. Together with Jupiter and Juno, she formed part of the Capitoline Triad, the very center and focus of Roman state religion. Size: 5.8" W x 9" H (14.7 cm x 22.9 cm); 9.8" H (24.9 cm) on included custom stand.
