Jules Jouant (French, 1863-1921)
Jules Jouant was a French sculptor who studied under Auguste Rodin at the Ecole des beaux arts in Paris. Jouant is known for his sculptural works created in the art nouveau style. Some of his well-known works are the bust of Prince Gedroyc and busts of musicians Richard Wagner, Frederic Chopin, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

AN UNUSUAL CHINESE BRONZE VESSEL WITH PHOENIXES Circa 1900, this bronze vase is finely cast with grapevines encircles the upper neck under a key motif border, the body with graceful phoenixes outstretched over swirling clouds, below long tailed turtles rest above waves on the tall foot, unusual Ming seal script mark to underside may indicate it was made in Taiwan under Japanese occupation after 1895.

JAPANESE BRONZE SIGNED VASE URN/STAND/SCROLL HOLDER, CA. LATE MEIJI PERIOD 35 ½" x 18" x 13" Oversized scale heavily cast bronze vase urn/stand/scroll holder with dark brown patina, consisting of three fitted parts; marked in an oval reserve on the upper part. Upper part with flared neck over banded shoulders, tapered stepped and rounded rim, handles fashioned as stylized dragons; two Phoenixes flying among clouds around the neck; two reserves on front and back depicting a pair of peacocks under a pine tree and a pair of birds perching on a blooming magnolia; key-fret borders around top and bottom, and lappet border. Middle part has reserves with Foo dogs among blossoming flowers alternating with dragons. Lower part with cast dragons in roiling sea waves; lappets and scroll designs over arched feet.
