19TH C BOOK TITLED ETCHINGS OF A WHALING CRUISEBY JOHN ROSS BROWNE. HE WAS THE THIRD OF SEVEN CHILDREN BORN TO THOMAS EGERTON BROWNE, AN IRISH NEWSPAPER EDITOR. THOMAS BROWNE WAS A NATIONALIST WHO RAN AFOUL OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT AND WAS SENT TO PRISON BUT RELEASED ON THE CONDITION OF HIS LEAVING IRELAND. IN 1833 HE AND HIS FAMILY EMIGRATED TO THE U. S. THEY SETTLED IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY WHERE HE BECAME A SCHOOL TEACHER AND EVENTUALLY EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR OF THE LOUISVILLE DAILY REPORTER. IN 1842 HIS SON JOHN ROSS SIGNED ONTO A WHALING SHIP. IN 1846 HE PUBLISHED THE BOOK AT HARPER BROS., NY, WHICH EARNED HIM RECOGNITION AS AN ARTIST AND WRITER AND IS THOUGHT TO HAVE INFLUENCED HERMAN MELVILLE. 580 PAGES. EMBOSSED CLOTH BOUND BOARDS, GILT LETTERING, OCTAVO, 9 1/2" X 6". CONSIDERED TO BE VERY SCARCE. CLIPPED TITLED PAGE, MINOR FOXING, BINDING TIGHT. FROM IPPOLITO COLLECTION.
