Group of Two Stoneware Salt
Group of Two Stoneware Salt Bins, fourth quarter 19th century, one an American pale blue-sprayed and gray-glazed stoneware cylindrical wall hanging salt bin in "Cherry Sprays" decor, and the other a similar wall-hanging salt bin in "Swastika" decor, each with the word "Salt" in bas-relief at the center of the facade, each example fitted with a wooden cover, the cover of the former fitted with brass hinges, h. 6".

Born in San Francisco, Grant is known for his etchings and paintings of marine subjects. At age 12, he sailed around Cape Horn to London to study art at Heatherly and Lambeth. He returned to San Francisco in 1895 to work at the "Examiner."

The man bears a passing resemblance to Naturalist John Muir (1838-1914).

Observed in frame, the painting appears in good original condition. Very fine and stable craquelure visible to the right edge of the sky. Inspection under UV shows no apparent signs of restoration or repairs.
