![EDGERTON, HAROLD (1909-1990)
Collection](/content/serve_image.php?id=dWNvb2tpZT1jMDY3NTQwZWIyNSw3MzY2NTE=&size=med2&)
EDGERTON, HAROLD (1909-1990)
Collection of 26 vintage photographs, comprising stop-motion prints of milk drop coronet, cock fight, white pigeon with wings spread, hummingbird, coils of smoke and propeller, and variant images of golf swings as well as cinematic montages depicting golf swings, the collapse of a soap bubble, solarized images of Edgerton with a hockey stick, and more; with 2 pictures of "Doc" and related ephemera. Silver prints, 10x8 inches (25.4x 20.3 cm.) and smaller, several are mounted; "Milk Drop" is signed and inscribed by Edgerton and others with his notations. Circa 1937
Formerly in the collection of Raymond S. Stevens, President of Arthur D. Little, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (where Edgerton was employed); to a descendent.
The archive includes several of Edgerton''s iconic images and a notable assortment of photographs relating to golf (since Stevens was an avid golfer). An inventory of the photographs is available upon request.
Also included is a Typed Letter Signed by the world-renowned golfer, Robert Tyre Jones Jr., a picture of Edgerton and the Spalding team, and assorted ephemera.
A scientist with an artist''s eye, Harold Eugene "Doc" Edgerton first began using photography to aid his experiments centered on his development of the electronic stroboscope. This invention allowed him to take split-second pictures of objects in motion that could not otherwise be seen by the human eye, and led to the invention of stop-action and ultra high-speed photography. Edgerton''s impact on the scientific community was significant. He photographed atomic bomb experiments, aerial night photography during World War II, and underwater photography.
Edgerton''s now-famous images have transcended his original purpose. Bullets piercing apples, hummingbirds in flight, light bulbs shattering, and athletes performing all fell under the scrutiny of Edgerton''s scientific lens and emerge in photographs notable for their mesmerizing composition and ability to capture the public imagination. In what is perhaps his best-known image, Edgerton attempted to produce a perfect coronet from a single drop of milk, an elegant image that speaks to how art and science merge.

![SPOUSE, Walt (1894-1975).The Wonderland](/content/serve_image.php?id=dWNvb2tpZT1jMDY3NTQwZWIyNSw3NjMxNzg=&size=med2&)
SPOUSE, Walt (1894-1975).The Wonderland of Oz. Collection of 312 clippings of the daily comic strip from the Arkansas Gazette, April 25, 1932-April 23, 1933. (Each 117 x 325 mm). Condition: slightly discolored with age. Provenance: Fred M. Meyer Collection.rare collection of this little-known oz comic strip. In 1932, the C.C. Winningham Company of Detroit contracted with the Reilly & Lee Co. for a daily comic strip based on the Oz Books and drawn by Walt Spouse. It was a remarkably faithful adaptation of the stories with a strong reliance on John R. Neill’s pictures. The books covered were The Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, The Emerald City of Oz, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, and Tik Tok of Oz. This run ends with the invisible gate in Chapter 13 of The Patchwork Girl of Oz. These daily episodes ran on Monday to Saturday April 1932 through October 1933; there were no Sunday episodes. It was also available in a Spanish version. Unfortunately few papers subscribed to the feature and it died quickly. The series was revived in color in the early comic books The Funnies and Hi-Spot Comics in 1938-1940. Speech bubbles replaced the captions as in conventional comic strips.

Paul Lacroix (NJ/NY, 1827-1869), Still Life oil on canvas, signed at lower left "P. LaCroix," with stencil on the verso reading "S. N. Dodges / Artist & Painter's / Supply Store / 189 Chatham cor(ner) / of Oliver St. / N. York" (Dodges used this stencil in the 1850s), housed in the likely original gilt wood frame.Paul Lacroix is believed to be French or French-Swiss in origin, but lived in New York City from 1858-1866. He lived in Hobeken, NJ for the remaining 1860s, but returned to New York City where he died in 1869.While he painted several landscapes, he was a very prolific still life painter with many of his works, this one included, illustrating Severin Roesen's influence. In fact, in Gerdts' "Painters of the Humble Truth: Masterpieces of American Still Life 1801-1939," he points out that Lacroix did not appear in New York City directories until after Roesen left the city. Therefore, the question has been raised that Lacroix may have painted under Roesen's direct tutelage. This picture is more evocative of Roesen's works than later still lives by Lacroix. It would have appealed to the wealthy classes with its lush depiction of grapes, segmented oranges, cherries, berries, and peaches piled into a pyramidal arrangement - with the stylish dining accoutrements of ceramic baskets and dishes - capped off by an open bottle of bubbly and two elegant champagne flutes.SS 25.5 x 35.5 in; DOA 33.5 x 43.5 in.

![FRAMED ABEL GANCE NAPOLEON FILM POSTER](/content/serve_image.php?id=dWNvb2tpZT1jMDY3NTQwZWIyNSwyMjk5NTg2&size=med2&)
FRAMED ABEL GANCE NAPOLEON FILM POSTER 1981 Landmark French Silent Cinema Restored Classic Coppola Zoetrope US Release Radio City Music Hall Details: This lot includes the film poster shown in the corresponding image(s). This framed piece presents French filmmaker Abel Gance's landmark silent movie "Napoleon" (1927) in its restored and reedited 1981 version, released in the United States by American Zoetrope (through Universal Pictures), with a score by Carmine Coppola performed live at the screenings. The poster offers a bust portrait of the title character (as incarnated by actor Albert Dieudonne), with only his face emerging from a dark blue military uniform and two-cornered hat. The figure of Napoleon is set against a background made up entirely of the French tricolor. The captions, in gold lettering, read, from top to bottom "Francis Ford Coppola presents Napoleon, Abel Gance's 1927 Masterpiece / Musical Score Performed Live by the American Symphony Orchestra composed and conducted by Carmine Coppola, October 15-25, 1981, Radio City Music Hall."Napoleon is a 1927 epic silent French film directed by Abel Gance that tells the story of Napoleon's early years. On screen, the title is "Napoleon vu par Abel Gance," meaning "Napoleon as seen by Abel Gance". The film is recognized as a masterwork of fluid camera motion, produced in a time when most camera shots were static. Many innovative techniques were used to make the film, including fast cutting, extensive close-ups, a wide variety of hand-held camera shots, location shooting, point of view shots, multiple-camera setups, multiple exposure, superimposition, underwater camera, kaleidoscopic images, film tinting, split screen and mosaic shots, multi-screen projection, and other visual effects. A revival of Napoléon in the mid-1950s influenced the filmmakers of the French New Wave. The film begins in Brienne-le-Chateau with youthful Napoleon attending military school where he manages a snowball fight like a military campaign, yet he suffers the insults of other boys. It continues a decade later with scenes of the French Revolution and Napoleon's presence at the periphery as a young army lieutenant. He returns to visit his family home in Corsica but politics shift against him and put him in mortal danger. He flees, taking his family to France. Serving as an officer of artillery in the Siege of Toulon, Napoleon's genius for leadership is rewarded with a promotion to brigadier general. Jealous revolutionaries imprison Napoleon but then the political tide turns against the Revolution's own leaders. Napoleon leaves prison, forming plans to invade Italy. He falls in love with the beautiful Josephine de Beauharnais. The emergency government charges him with the task of protecting the National Assembly. Succeeding in this he is promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Interior, and he marries Josephine. He takes control of the army which protects the French–Italian border, and propels it to victory in an invasion of Italy.Gance planned for Napoleon to be the first of six movies about Napoleon's career, a chronology of great triumph and defeat ending in Napoleon's death in exile on the island of Saint Helena. After the difficulties encountered in making the first film, Gance realised that the costs involved would make the full project impossible. The film was first released in a gala at the Palais Garnier (then the home of the Paris Opera) on 7 April 1927. Napoleon had been screened in only eight European cities when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought the rights to it, but after screening it in London, it was cut drastically in length, and only the central panel of the three-screen Polyvision sequences were retained before it was put on limited release in the US. There, the silent masterpiece was indifferently received at a time when talkies were just starting to appear. The film was restored in 1981 after twenty years' work by silent film historian Kevin Brownlow.
