[Civil War Archive] John Buchanan
[Civil War Archive] John Buchanan Mass. 1st Battn. Cavalry Discharge & Personal Documents Plus Lot includes sixth plate tintype of unidentified Civil War soldier housed in an agrarian motif Union case; plus John Buchanan's 1865 discharge certificate Commonwealth of Massachusetts naturalization certificate appointment as a police officer in the City of Lowell cemetery deed and marriage certificate. The documents and tintype were found together in a home in Adams Co. OH. John Buchanan was born in Amherst Nova Scotia and was living in Lowell when he enlisted in the 1st Battalion Frontier Cavalry (Massachusetts) on December 30 1864. He served guarding the Canadian border until June 30th returned to Lowell resumed farming and got married in September. The accompanying documents state that Buchanan was naturalized a United States citizen in 1868 became a police officer in his late 40s and seems to have lived his entire adult life in Lowell.
