HERIBERTO JUAREZ, MATADOR SCULPTUREHeriberto Juarez (Mexico, 1932 - 2008) bronze sculpture depicting a bullfighting scene with matador or torero confronting the bull with his cape. Signed on base and mounted on a circular, 1" H plinth of red marble. 10 3/4" H overall. Biography (courtesy the Boca Raton Museum of Art/Emilio Gamboa Patron): Heriberto Juarez was born on a farm in San Juan Teotihuacan, and worked as a bullfighter in his youth. He was primarily self-taught. Once he discovered sculpture and drawing, he made bulls, toreadors and other bullfighting subjects common themes. His work included public monuments and smaller private commissions, and can be found in numerous collections including the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Museum of Latin American Art, and the Heriberto Juarez Arts Garden at the Universidad de las Americas Pueblos in Mexico. JOSE PUENTE BULL FIGHT WATERCOLORS, FOUR (4)Set of four Jose Puente (Spanish 1928-2002) watercolor and ink drawings depicting bull fights (Madrid 1963); all signed to LR and three marked verso; two in matching frames measuring approximately 13-1/8" x 16-1/4" with sight images of approximately 7-3/4" x 10-3/4", one measuring approximately 13-1/4" x 16-3/8" with sight image of 7-3/4" x 10-3/4", and smallest measuring approximately 12-3/4" x 15-1/2" with sight image of 7-3/8" x 10"; all in overall good condition with light toning; one loose in frame.
José Puente was one of the best painters in Spain of the bullfighting field. Born in Medina del Campo, Spain in 1928, he settled in the suburb of Pinto when he was 18 years of age. José Puente began his career as a graphic designer and publicist, but soon drifted to the branch that would give him a name and prestige. He learned his art in the most traditional streets of downtown Madrid and in the bullfighting arena. He worked for the former magazine ‘The Ring’, where he published his first cover in 1948. José Puente illustrated the bullfighting chronicals in the pages of ABC in 1981. In his adult life, José Puente lived and painted in Madrid, in the famous Santa Ana Square, but his ‘soul’ was in Seville. He died in 2002.
