EARL E. COLLINS O/C MARINE PAINTING,EARL E. COLLINS O/C MARINE PAINTING, LIGHTNING CLIPPER ...Earl Edward Collins (Connecticut/New York, 1925-1992) oil on canvas maritime painting depicting the clipper ship "Lightning" sailing across tumultuous waters, an American flag visible at the stern. Signed and dated "Earl Collins '82" lower right. Handwritten index card with history of the Lightning en verso of frame. Housed in a metallic silver wooden frame with off white linen liner and metallic silver wood fillet. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 25 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. Note: "Built by Donald McKay, the Lightning was the first clipper built in the United States for a British firm. In 1862, returning to Liverpool, it struck an uncharted rock in Rip. No water entered the vessel but, on arrival at Liverpool, a rock 6 feet long was found sticking through its timbers and beginning to work loose. Under Capt. 'Bully' Forbes, the Lightning made its first voyage to Australia in 77 days, and on its return voyage made it in a record 64 days. It had the distinction of carrying, free of charge, early consignments of introduced animals, including rabbits, sent to Thomas Austin of Barwon Park, Winchelsea. The Lightning's entire life was spent on the Australian run carrying immigrants and cargo. The wreck of the Lightning caused by the fire was the worst shipping calamity in Geelong's history. A fire that had broken out was discovered at about 1 am. Water was pumped into lower hold in an attempt to douse it but the efforts of local volunteer fire brigades were unsuccessful. The blazing ship was towed away from the Yarra Street Wharf by James Deane's tug Resolute. Attempts to scuttle the vessel by boring holes and cutting the outside planking also failed. The Volunteer Artillery had also been unsuccessful in attempts to sink the vessel to put out the fire. The wreck was finally removed with explosives. The Lightning finally sank at about 6 pm., her location about 200 yards from Wharf in 25 feet of water. Geelong's Centenary celebrations included a re-enactment of burning of Lightning." The master full of Whig and Tory, talks politics and tells a story, and swears he is not such a sot, but that he knows full well, what's what. 5.Now gentlemen - see here's a piece - I hope you'll all bid up for this. Two Guineas - thirty shillings - twenty. Sure gentlemen that will content ye. Who bids? Fifteen dye say? For shame tis not the vaule of the frame. Sixteen is bid for't - once - twice - thrice, sixteen - tis going at half the price. 7.While thus the revelling debauchee, dandles his mistress on his knee, th' old baud is reckoning up the score, of all that has been spent and more. In comes the monarch of the night, and puts them in a horrid fright, the lover swears, the lady shrieks, behind the door the bully sneeks. Large, Fine and Rare Felix Optat MiletLarge, Fine and Rare Felix Optat Milet (French, 1838-1911) Gilt-Brass-Mounted "Islamic" Pottery Vase, fourth quarter 19th century, the vase of circular cushion form, with a gold ground and decorated with a wide band of polychrome enamel arabesques separated by scrolling flowers, the interior in a turquoise glaze, signed in underglaze green "Optat/Sevres/Milet", mounted in a Louis XVI-style gilt-brass ovolo collar, large espagnolette handles and a circular base with four acanthus-scroll feet, h. 12-3/4", bowl dia. 14-1/2", w. 18-1/2". Felix Optat Milet was a third generation potter and ceramacist born in Martincamp, Bully, Dienne. He began working at the Sevres Manufactory in 1862, where his brother Ambrose was already the Director of Kilns. He was well-regarded for his studies in the chemical composition and re-creation of antique glazes, particularly Chinese copper red. He received authorization in 1866 to open his own workshop, where his reputation for excellence and innovation attracted the top decorators of his day, among them Louis d'Eaubonne, Charles Ficquenet and Louis-Emile Diffloth. His close friend and associate Clement Massier opened the Paris boutique Dalvaux in 1800, where Milet's pottery was featured alongside Haviland-Limoges porcelain and Clichy and Choisy-le-Roi glass. Milet's pottery, distinguished by its innovative aesthetic style and vibrant colors, received a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition. He died in 1911, but his shop was continued by his son Jean Paul and later his grandson, Henri, until 1971. Examples of Milet's extraordinary ceramics may be found in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, the Manufacture du Sevres, and the Musee Adrien Dubouche, Limoges.
