A LOUIS XVI STYLE BUREAU PLAT,
A LOUIS XVI STYLE BUREAU PLAT, FRANCOIS LINKEA good quality Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted plum pudding mahogany, and parquetry bureau plat Franois Linke circa 1900 Inscribed F. Linke, with locking compartment to interior of one drawer, one lock removed to reveal CT. Linke SERRURERIE PARIS and numbered 2606. height 29 1/2in (75cm); width 47in (120cm); depth 26in (66cm)Provenance: Property from a Private Collection, Malibu, California.Other Notes: Francois Linke (1855-1946) was born in Pankraz, Bohemia, emigrating to France in 1875 where he studied design. By 1900 he was employing ninety craftsmen at his ateliers, at 170 Faubourg Saint-Antoine. His association with sculptor Lon Messag (d.1904) began at this time and their combined talents produced the finest examples of Linke's works. For the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, Messag executed all the mounts for the Linke pieces exhibited, which were received with critical acclaim and Linke was awarded the Medaille d'Or.
Condition:
With an overall honey color to the evenly faded, highly figured timber. Very well made. Structurally sound. Typical marks, scratches, rubbing and wear commensurate with age and use. Leather top good, with some spotty scars, water and other staining, as visible in the catalogue photo. Drawer with lockable compartment apparently lacking top for opposing compartment. Mounts with a somewhat brassy tone overall, possibly as the result of being lacquered.
