[Provenance: By 1861 the Michigan-born William Ruthven Wheeler had settled in Middletown CT where his wife had family. Hoping to take advantage of the city's expanding commercial community he moved the family to Hartford. It was here that he painted this portrait of the wife of David Brooks and their first child. During the Civil War Julia Brooks volunteered for the Women's Aid Society of Asylum Hill Congregational Church. The child pictured here Mary Rosanna died in infancy in 1861. Deaccessioned from the Wadsworth Atheneum sold to benefit acquisition funds.]
