WINCHESTER 1895 CARBINE, 1ST MODEL,
WINCHESTER 1895 CARBINE, 1ST MODEL, .38-72 WCF An absolutely wonderful example of the Winchester 1895 rifle as it would've first appeared on the commercial market. This design of rifle is notable in a few respects, one for being Winchesters first offering designed for the then newly-introduced spitzer bullets and two for being one of John Browning's last designs for Winchester. This particular firearm is in a carbine configuration with an octagon barrel, flat-side receiver and smooth walnut handguard and buttstock with curved steel buttplate. The sights are a simple flip-up V-notches for 100 and 200 yard elevations with a driftable front blade. The blued finish is all but completely worn off with only a few spots still visible on the hammer and on sections of the lever mechanism. Mechanically there are no noticeable issues with the action still feeling remarkably smooth for its age. There is frosting visible in the rifling though the lanes and grooves are still defined. Some minor dings to the buttstock. S/N: 2517, Caliber: .38-72 WCF, BBL: 20", OAL: 39"

SHARPS & HANKINS NAVY CARBINE,

The rifle is in overall fine condition with some repairs apparent, the most prevalent being the replacement of the action lever. As part of its weatherization for ocean conditions, the barrel originally had a leather shroud which is now completely absent. S/N: 11397, Caliber: .52 RF, BBL: 24", OAL: 39"

RARE CIVIL WAR GREENE UNDERHAMMER
RARE CIVIL WAR GREENE UNDERHAMMER RIFLE, .50 CALIBER A unique rifle that holds the distinction of being the first bolt-action rifle adopted by the U.S. Military when the Ordnance Dept. ordered 900 of them in 1859. The rifle has a number of unique characteristics including a bottom-mounted hammer intended to reduce the chance of powder burns to the shooter's face, a handle-operated bolt that also acted a bullet plunger for seating a round to the chamber, and last but not least a very unorthodox paper cartridge design with the bullet placed behind the powder. With this design, a ready-to-fire Greene rifle actually has two projectiles loaded, one at the front of the chamber and another at the rear, creating a seal at the bolt face upon firing. The shooter then would only be required to rotate the bolt handle up and push it forward to seat the previously rearward projectile and insert another paper cartridge before placing another percussion cap. This particular rifle has had a rough life, unfortunately, with the bolt and plunger completely seized shut, a large crack to the stock at the grip, heavy corrosion around the percussion nipple, and spots of surface rust throughout. The cleaning rod is also missing but the bore brush is still present in the trapdoor compartment in the buttstock. A very rare and interesting piece of American firearm history! OAL: 52 1/2", BBL: 35"
