George Bicklemann Antiques in Birmingham(Michigan). As an illustrator A.B. Frost specialized in Southern subject matter and is considered one of the best artists of the Golden Age of American illustration. The story of Wilby and his ex-slave was famous after the Civil War. This image was published in The Century magazine vol. 40 (1) May 1890 with the caption ''You think Travis didn't cry when I told him goodbye?'' The story told of how Major Wilby left his plantation in the hands of his foreman so that he could go to the city and find work in order to pay his depts. The story of Travis and Wilby is included in many anthologies and works on the South. See Michael E. Price. 2000. Stories with a Moral: Literature and Society in Nineteenth Century Georgia. As an illustrator A.B. Frost specialized in Southern subject matter and is considered one of the best artists of the Golden Age of American illustration. His work appears in over 90 books and periodicals. He is perhaps best known for his paintings of hunting fishing and birding and he produced several calendars for Winchester based on these works. He also created humorous images of rural life and depictions of African Americans that were typical of his time period.
