BELL. Vanduzen and Tift Cincinnati Ohio mid 19th century bronze with cast iron stand and clapper. Marked 'Vanduzen & Tift Buckeye Bell Foundry Cincinnati Ohio 1865' in relief on side of bell. Neoclassical collar with putti in bas relief. 20'h. 20'd. Vanduzen and Tift opened the Buckeye Bell Foundry in 1837. Throughout the 19th century they manufactured high quality bells for schools firehouses plantations and of course riverboats.

Hooper Bookshop labels to rear pastedowns. In red cloth and brown leather case. All with wear and scratches to boards and spines, bumped corners, spine frayed and torn volume I, cloth missing from spine volume III, shelf wear to all, foxing throughout all, bindings loose, notations in ink and pencil on endpapers, half title pages and title pages; case worn, leather cracked, missing back section. Provenance: Sotheby Parke Bernet, Madison Ave., New York, 1/26/1977; private collection, New York City; thence by descent.
The Professor. First Tauchnitz edition, 1857. Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig. Front and back boards detached, corners bumped, wear to cover and spine, losses to leather on spine, front endpapers and title page partially detached from binding, notations in pencil back of title page, binding loose. Brass with iron clapper copper ferrule and turned walnut handle; 7.5 in. high.? Bells of this type are referred to as either school bells or table bells used to call people to a meal or meeting.George Washington Parke Custis? (1781-1857) was Martha Washington's grandson from her first marriage to Daniel Parke Custis (1711-1757).?? He was raised from infancy by George and Martha who never had children together and was appointed by Washington as one of the executors of his estate.? Washington's will reads: ...it has always been my intention since my expectation of having Issue has ceased to consider the Grand children of my wife in the same light as I do my own relations and to act a friendly part by them; more especially by the two whom we have reared from their earliest infancy--namely--Eleanor Parke Custis & George Washington Parke Custis...by the principal already mentioned I give and bequeath to George Washington Parke Custis the Grandson of my wife and my Ward and to his heirs the tract I hold on four mile run in the vicinity of Alexandria containing one thousd two hundred acres more or less & my entire Square number twenty one in the City of Washington.? The former property became Arlington House the grand estate of Custis which he would leave to his only surviving child and her husband Robert E. Lee and would eventually become Arlington National Cemetery.? G.W.P. Custis was only 18 years old when Washington died and was still residing at Mount Vernon.? He was not offered that estate due to the fact that he was already in line for several large estates owned by his late father but he was directed by Washington to distribute its contents among himself and the other heirs. Acquired from the Rockwell Estate in Kansas City MO Condition: Nice patina with minor pitting and scratching at the lip.
