GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS
GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS
MONGOLIA, ZANABAZAR SCHOOL ?? ??????? ?????????finely cast seated in padmasana on a raised double lotus throne, a large vase containing the elixir of longevity cradled in his hands in dhyana mudra, wearing a low dhoti detailed with incised hem, a scarf flowing fluidly through his broad shoulders, elaborate necklace adorned his chest, further with jewellery on wrists, arms, and calves, large earrings flanked the meditative face below a five-leaf flame-like crown, hair tied up in high coiffure topped with a large jewel, stream-like long locks emerging from back of the head cascading down and spilling onto the throne, the baseplate gilt and incised with a double-vajra(1)32cm high; 5001gProvenance: Formerly in a private English collectionNote: Wearing a dignified expression and princely appearance, this Buddha of Infinite Life, seated on a stepped lotus base, resonates the artistic paradigms of the celebrated Mongolian Buddhist teacher and artist Jebstundampa Khutukhtu Zanabazar (1635-1723). The legacy of his sculptural style is recognisable by rich gilding and at times painted details on voluptuous portrayal of the female form, or, in this case, a masculine rendition of male form, shown through the powerful broad shoulders. The textile patterns, distinguished jewellery designs, smooth contours, sensitive modelling of the faces, fine arches of Amitayus' brows and his aquiline nose are also of his atelier. [1]Two comparable gilt-bronze figures of Amitayus, 19th century, are in the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts, HAR. 50243 & 50306, note the former with similarity of the lotus base depicts wide petals placed on a high pedestal finished with a beaded rim together with vertical lines imitating the ridges of a lotus pod, and the latter with elaborate vase of longevity; Several other examples can be found in auctions, including one, 18th century, sold at Bonham's Hong Kong, 29 May 2022, lot 140; one sold at Christie's London, 15 May 2018, lot 167; and one at Christie's New York, 31 Mar 2005, lot 188. DON BALKE (B. 1933) "MUSK OX WITH
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "MUSK OX WITH YOUNG"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Musk Ox with Young" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked January 3, 1984.
Covered with short curly hair, the baby Musk Ox takes its first wobbly steps under the watchful eyes of its mother. Born on Alaska's windswept tundra, the newborn calf will huddle under its mother's long hair skirt for protection from the Arctic chill. As the calf grows stronger, it learns to kick and butt with the other youngsters in the herd. Through the short summer season, the Musk Oxen roam the valleys and alpine meadows of Alaska grazing on grasses and willow boughs. As the young calves age, their shaggy coats grow longer and thicker to protect them from the coming winter's frigid climates and bitter winds. Like sheep, Musk Oxen shed their coats each spring. This trait led to recent research which suggests Musk Oxen are not really oxen, nor do they have a musk odor. They are, however, closely related to sheep, goats and mountain goats. For centuries, Eskimos descriptively called Musk Oxen, Oomingmak, which means "the bearded one." High above their bearded chins, the young Musk Oxen will soon grow long, elastic horns which form a shield covering the crest of their heads. These interesting animals will form a circular fortress when threatened, their horned heads lining the outer edge. The young oxen are protected by the entire herd in the center of the ring. When attacked, the Musk Oxen fling predators into the air and, as they land, trample them. Roaming the snowy tundras of Alaska, the powerful Musk Ox is truly an amazing animal.

DON BALKE (B. 1933) 'MOUNTAIN
DON BALKE (B. 1933) 'MOUNTAIN CARIBOU"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Mountain Caribou" Signed lower center. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked November 11, 1984.
It is spring in the Washington wilderness and tender young Caribou calves prance about the countryside, reddish-brown coats glistening prettily in the warm sunshine. A few short weeks ago, these lovely long-legged creatures were born. Within a few hours, they were walking, and within a few days, they were running -- as fast and as gracefully as their mothers. But, despite this freedom of movement, the baby Caribou still needs guidance, and will stay with his mother as autumn leaves fall and through the rigorous winter to come. Devoted to her offspring, the proud cow will spend many hours licking, nudging, bumping and touching her calf -- also looking for him as he becomes more and more curious about the world. Playing games of chase and follow the leader, the growing calf will leap and dash about, sometimes wandering a bit too far from the herd. The anxious mother may then follow in pursuit, identifying her calf by a series of snorts and by scent. Should she sense danger, the cow will resort to an unusual Caribou language consisting of head bobs, grunts and nudges, to urge her beloved baby to safety -- most often the safety of a high ridge or hill. In early spring, however, as the new calving season approaches, the mother Caribou must prepare for her new baby. Her little yearling will be left or driven off to join the main herd and to eventually raise calves of its own.
