A Porcelain "Memento Mori" Cup and Saucer Inscribed with the motto "Es wird noch alles anders." (everything will eventually change) on the side of the coffee can shape cup, and with a skull and crossbones painted en grisaille in the saucer with "Momento mori." in script above and "den 13ten Januar 1801" below. Decorated with bands of black glaze and gilt. Marked in underglaze blue on each piece, for either Regensburg, Thuringia, or Gotha factories, Germany.

Provenance: Dr Bernard Watney, until sold Phillips, Son & Neale Ltd (II) 10 May 2000, lot 763.
The finely executed and unusual decoration is in Yongzheng/early Qianlong style. The cup could have been made as a replacement for a Chinese export set.

The translucent vessel with all around raised spiral-molded surface, the lower part of cylindrical form with an upper wide round projecting rim, and a circular molded foot, mineral deposits, with overall moderate silvery blue iridescence.
