• 18TH CENTURY STERLING SNUFFER TRAY
  18TH CENTURY STERLING SNUFFER TRAY 4 ¼" x 8 ?" x 2 ½" The first mention in England of a suffer to extinguish a candle was in in the middle of the 15 th century. This handled tray was paired with a scissors type snuffer at one time, this design emerged in the early 1700's. Georgian wicks in candles did not consume, and the wicks had to be cut back everyday. The small scissors blade at the tip performed the task. There is no shortage of silver plated period pieces if the buyer wishes to replicated the original format. Sadly, spikes in the silver market has played havoc on remaining pieces. This piece has correct hallmarks for 1760 London, the maker being Alex Johnson. Weighs approximately 11.35 troy ounces. Armorial is a griffin on a parapet.
