149. ANGLO-AMERICAN FOLK ART CANE
149. ANGLO-AMERICAN FOLK ART CANE -CA. 1840 -FASHIONED ...149. Anglo-American Folk Art Cane -Ca. 1840 -Fashioned of a boxwood branch freed from its bark and with a natural bough handle somehow evocative of a dog head profile. The cane is decorated in pen work technique with various panels showing the rural life of the time including a farm and fields with 11 horses, carriages and a hunter with a gun following his hunting dog. The neck of the cane is engraved with the large initials “TTM” above “Sheepstead Burks” in an oval panel. We can safely assume that this name is related to the illustrated farm. The quirky twist of the boxwood branch and its refreshing narrative graphic qualities and humor, as well as, an untouched age grown patina, lend this cane an admirable individuality and make of it a first rate collectable. -H. 5 ¼”, O.L. 34” -$400-$600
