WATCH CANE-Ca. 1920 -Plain and hinged white metal knob encasing a white metal open face watch with a beautiful enamel dial with gold dot minute scala, black Roman 12 hours day and red Arabic 24 hours ones and delicate, gold Baroque hands. The watch, with a winding bezel and engine turned backside is working perfectly. While the case retained the, meanwhile yellowed and quite obscured, initial celluloid cover, the watch is missing its, easily obtainable, glass cover. 42. GIANT AUTOMATED DOG HEAD CANE
42. GIANT AUTOMATED DOG HEAD CANE -CA. 1900 -GIANT FRUI...42. Giant Automated Dog Head Cane -Ca. 1900 -Giant fruitwood handle naturalistically carved in the shape of a French bulldog’s head with a finely engraved hairy coat, bone applications on the ears and glass eyes, beautiful and wide silver collar with a lion between two raised ring borders, malacca shaft and a metal ferrule. The lower jaw of the canine is hinged and can be articulated with the lever under the chin. Once depressed, the dog opens his mouth to show a red tongue framed by a row of sharp teeth. If the lever is suddenly dropped, it produces a penetrating, barking-like noise. Be it a glove holder cane or a come-on wink toy of a Don Juan who wanted to catch the attention of a lady and flirt discreetly, this Viennese cane is surely an amusing collectable and in perfectly working condition. The huge size, so far unrecorded, raised also opinions that the cane could have been intended as mascot for the window of a walking sticks store to attract potential clients. -For similar pieces see C. Dike, Cane Curiosa, chapter 18, Gentlemen canes, page 190. She reports on her foreword for the related chapter that: On a stroll in town, etiquette required that a man wears gloves, a hat and a walking stick. It also required that his right hand be bare when he kissed a lady’s hand. And so, the cane’s handle was an ideal place to fit the glove. -H. 8 ½” x 3 ½”, O.L. 40 ½” -$1,200-1,800

FRUITWOOD AUTOMATED DOG HEAD
FRUITWOOD AUTOMATED DOG HEAD CANE-Ca. 1900 -Large fruit wood knob well carved in very fine detail to depict a Schnauzer’s head with the distinctive eyebrows and walrus mustache left long around the muzzle flanked by two intelligent and alert glass glass yes. -Rosewood shaft of a rich brown-red natural color with a plain silver collar and a horn ferrule. -When the lever under the chin is depressed, the dog opens his mouth to show a red tongue with a framing row of white teeth and, in the same time, turns his upright ears. -Notable is the superb condition of the cane and its smoothly working mechanics. It proudly survived the depredations time, children and clumsy housemaids and is upgraded by long years of careful use. We have good reasons to believe, that almost all the automated canes, offered for sale in Europe in the 19th century, were exclusively manufactured in Vienna, and the international cane dealers of the period had rights for some models. -This particular articulating head, so-far unrecorded and retailed at that period on the local Austro-Hungarian market, is extremely appealing on one side for its larger size and on the other for its striking function. Be it a glove holder cane or a come-on wink toy of a Don Juan who wanted to catch the attention of a woman and flirt discreetly, this Viennese cane fascinates children and adults alike and is a rarely encountered and great collectable. -H. 2 ½” x 2 ¼”, O.L. 36” -$900-$1,200 -For similar pieces see C. Therefore, the cane’s handle was deal place to fit the glove.
