GOLD AMERICAN PRESENTATION
GOLD AMERICAN PRESENTATION CANEDated 1858-Early rolled gold knob fashioned in the classic New World “Head” shape and engraved on the round top in delicate flowing handscript “Presented / to / D. E. Gomes Esq. / by the / Employees in his Shoe / manufactory / Bidd cl Oct. , 16, 1858”. The body is molded with two rich different floral and foliage panels alternating with two others in the same taste but with two escutcheons engraved “Free / Labor” and “A Token / of / Esteem”. It ends with an integral twin ring collar and comes on a well-dressed malacca shaft and a horn ferrule. Apart of its ornate handle, other factors setting it apart are its attractive intense yellow color and presentation text extending on the body of the knob. In any case, it distils the Pre-Civil war taste essence and that touch of Anglo-Saxon aristocratic pomp that separates most New-World styles from others. H. 1 ½” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 36” Malacca is one species of rattan (Calamus Ascipionum) found on the coast of Sumatra. Rattan palms have long, slender stems, and were perfect for fashioning walking sticks. The stem is not round, but has a ridge or spine, often called a “teardrop,” running along its length. The more pronounced the spine, the more desirable the stick. It is agreeably light-weight and flexible, yet strong and exceptionally durable. Early in this century, malacca was referred to as the “King of Canes”.

GOLD AMERICAN PRESENTATION
GOLD AMERICAN PRESENTATION CANECa. 1900-Large and elongated gold rolled knob fashioned in a stylized teardrop shape and chased in high relief with rich scrollwork and flowers. It is and personalized with three engraved initials on the round top and comes on an ebony shaft and a metal ferrule. This cane witnesses a great manufacturing sophistication, embodies the New World taste of the industrial revolution and is a superb example of a never again reached American skill and craftsmanship. It survived in superb condition and with its initial sparkle. H. 2 ¾” x 1 ½”, O.L. 36 ½” For similar objects see Francis H. Monek’s book, Canes Through The Ages, p. 80, 129 and 134, and the original illustration of the Marshall Field & Company’s catalog of 1893-94 reproduced on pages 64 and 65 and here. The description found in the Boston Post provides a good idea on how these canes were made: The gold in the heads of the cane is of 14-karat fineness. It is rolled into sheets, cut to the desired size and soldered in a conical tube, then placed in a sectional steel chuck or form, which admits of its being drawn into the exact shape of the finished head. The tops are first cut into discs, and then soldered to the cane after it has been shaped. They are then filled with a hard composition and chased, or ornamented, by hand, after which this composition filling is removed and they are sent to the polishing room for final finishing.

TORTOISESHELL AND GOLD DAGGER
TORTOISESHELL AND GOLD DAGGER CANECa. 1880-Solid tortoiseshell handle fashioned in a well-proportioned L-shape and embellished with equally spread yellow gold stars as well as an escutcheon engraved with the “NS” initials of the first cane’s owner, matching gold collar, ebony shaft and a brass ferrule. Notable is the translucency of the tortoiseshell and its warm colors, testifying for high-grade material. The cane breaks under the collar in two parts through a simple but efficient friction lock device to release a 9 ½” tall steel blade, forged and beautifully tooled in six equally long registers adorned with etched stars, x’s and dots to end with a plain and tapering, dart-like tip. Striking visual presence and understated elegance with a discerning style that make it unique, this cane pays tribute to the recognized French skills and presents a far-reaching redefinition of the dagger cane. H. 6” x 2 ½”, O.L. 37 ½”

GOLD AMERICAN PRESENTATION
GOLD AMERICAN PRESENTATION CANEDated 1895-Gold rolled knob fashioned in a well-proportioned customary basic shape with an integral ring collar richly hand chased and engraved with repeating panels of floral and scrollwork and engraved at the widening, round top “1845, Oliver Willison, May 28 1895”. This cane witnesses a great manufacturing sophistication and is from the highest grade of its kind. It survived in mint condition and with its entire sparkle. The knob shows great similarities to the hereby illustrated page from the original Marshall Field & Co. catalog from the 1890 with the “Gold Headed Canes”. Gold headed canes were traditionally reserved for physicians. The Alumni-Faculty Association Bulletin from the School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, California, Volume 1, Nr. 3, Page 5, from September, 1953, mentions “The Gold Headed Cane, an award adapted from English early medical history, is the school’s most highly prize award. It is given annually to the student who, in in the judgment of classmates and faculty members, has best exemplified the qualities of the true physician during his clinical training.” The description found in the Boston Post provides a good idea on how these canes were made: The gold in the heads of the cane is of 14-karat fineness.
