JACKSONVILLE CABINET PHOTO
JACKSONVILLE CABINET PHOTO RIVERBOAT CAPTAINCharles Edward Garner moved to Florida from Ohio in the early 1880s. He quickly founded a Steamship Line. His ship the Port Royal carried traffic mostly on the lower St. Johns river. He is still shown as owning a steamer line in 1898. Around the turn of the century he left the water, apparently a successful businessman, and by 1902 he was President of the Florida National Bank in Jacksonville His bank issued $5 notes at that time, signed by him. This cabinet photo is in fine condition, and was taken by S. P. (Samuel Peter) Burgert at Burgert's studio in Jax. His name is at the bottom of the photo mounting card. This is the same Burgert who then went to the Tampa Bay area setting up a huge studio run by his family, taking thousands of early photos of the area.
