A manuscript archive of John Rutherford, he was a captured Revolutionary war soldier and merchant seaman. During one of his many expeditions, in a correspondence dated May 11, 1800, the letter describes how he was robbed of his valuables after his ship, the brig 'Nathaniel,' was captured by a French privateer ship called the 'Little Liberty Commands.' Then a letter dated Oct 9, 1809 with the entry" I am once more a prisoner, I was captured by a small privateer...who took us to St Martins..." Following with another letter posted in a stampless cover from Norfolk, VA dated Sept 10th, 1811, having one entry describing his feeling about his brother who had escaped during the Great Newburyport Fire of May 31, 1811, when the bulk of the town burned down. With heartfelt advice using nautical comparisons. Another letter describes leaving Newburyport on August 15, 1809 in the schooner 'Two Sons,' as the master, and being captured by a privateer schooner. The master being Mathew Paien, and taken to St Martins with full discharge of goods being carried out and quantities listed. There are several deeds, a letter of condolence for the loss of his wife from a friend and some papers and correspondence of his wife Jane and a document dated Jan 14, 1784, historically the same day as the when the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, officially establishing the United States as an independent and sovereign nation, from Ipswich, which came with the collection but with unrelated names, describing the pay and conditions for a person to work on a boat, with a total archive of 15 different documents. BRONZE MODEL OF THE VENDôME
BRONZE MODEL OF THE VENDôME COLUMN ON A BLACK MARBLE BASE18 1/4 x 5 1/2 x 5 1/ 2in.
Note: The Vendôme column was erected from 1806-1810 to celebrate Napoleon's victory at Austerlitz, the bronze facing of the Vendome column is made from the 1,100 Russian and Austrian cannons captured during the battle. it is directly inspired by Trajan's column. The original figure surmounting the column was that of Napoleon in Roman dress. This statue was taken down and melted after Napoleon's fall, but replaced by King Louis Philippe with one showing Napoleon in this classic tricorn hat and redingote. This was later deemed undignified by Napoleon III, and replaced with a copy of the original statue. During the Commune of 1871, at the instigation of painter Gustave Courbet, the column was torn down. Courbet was later ordered to pay for the cost of reassembling the column and he fled into exile to Switzerland. When the column was re-erected in 1874, it was again with a copy of the original statue of Napoleon in Roman imperial dress.
The Neoclassicist: Niall Smith

PAIR OF WROUGHT IRON ANCHORSca.
PAIR OF WROUGHT IRON ANCHORSca. 1790-1820; this type of anchor with a diamond shaped eye for the wooden stock at the top of a long shank was typical in Nova Scotia and was called a "Grand Banks Anchor". These anchors were recovered from an unknown location in the Chesapeak Bay around 1960. They are two bow anchors of a Schooner-size vessel originating in the Nova Scotia area. It is thought that they may be from the Schooner "St. Lawrence", a part of the British force in the Chesapeak during the War of 1812. The ship was run aground during the Battle at St. Leonard's Creek in 1814 and would have jettisoned heavy anchors at that time. The damaged ship was retrieved and repaired by the British, but the anchors, not being standard Admiralty issue may have been abandoned. The St. Lawrence was previously captured and taken into the British fleet. WIthout knowing where they were found, their past is an interesting conjecture. A sturdy wooden two-wheel dolly goes with the anchors - by slipping it under the joint of the flukes with the shank and lifting the ring at the top of the shank, two people can pull or push the anchors with no trouble. The dolly has cast iron wheels about 8"d. The anchors are 8'7" in length, 55" wide at fluke tips and 14"d ring, estimated at weighing about 600 pounds.
