Note: These consoles are similar to a design by Thomas Sheraton: 'As pier tables are merely for ornament under a glass, they are generally made very light and the style of finishing them is rich and elegant. Sometimes the tops are solid marble, but most commonly veneered in rich satin, or other valuable wood, with a cross-band on the outside, a border about two inches richly japanned, and a narrow cross-band beyond it to go all round...stretching-rails have of late been introduced to these tables, and it must be owned that it is with good effect...as they take off the long appearance of the legs...' (see Sheraton, Thomas, 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book', published 1794, Appendix, 'Pier Tables', pages 8 and 9, Plate IV). Sheraton (1751-1806) moved to London around 1790 where he lived for a while at No 41 Davies Street and worked in Wardour Street. His books, published for subscribers in 42 bi-weekly instalments over the years between 1791 and 1794, were extremely influential in shaping the style for Neo-Classical furniture of the time. As a teacher of drawing and architecture he stressed the importance of perspective. He later was ordained as a Baptist minister and left only one known signed piece of furniture, dying in poverty.
The above offered lot has similar painted tops to a pair of George III Polychrome Painted Satinwood Card Tables, sold Christie's, London, April 9, 2003, Lot 80 which sold for GPB33,460 and are in the manner of Seddon, Sons and Shackleton. The pair of card tables and the offer lot shares much in common with the documented work of Seddon, Sons and Shackleton. See C. Note: This fine table relates closely to a number of documented Charleston examples with bellflower chain and lily of the valley inlay (see Rauschenberg & Bivins, The Furniture of Charleston, pg. 672-675.) This example, with its dynamic satinwood banding on the top and elaborate inlays, represents one of the most highly ambitious card tables to survive from Federal Charleston. Another very closely related table is in the Rivers collection of Charleston as referenced in the Moorehouse receipt.
Condition:
This fine table has good integrity overall with some repairs and restorations at legs and leg attachments. One front leg retains its original facing but has been reset onto a later leg replacement. The other three legs have inset scars, presumably from previous L bracket supports, now removed. Note: As the accompanying Bivins discussion indicates, "the variegated star found on the center tablet is a familiar Charleston motif, frequently seen on rosettes and prospect doors, and found on a card table signed by E.G. Sass, the son of one of the first German cabinetmakers to advertise in Charleston after the Revolution, and dated 1811." Bivins goes on to note that "this table falls within the mainstream of neoclassical Charleston card tables and is an excellent example of the confluence of stylistic influences from both the Scottish and German schools of cabinetmaking."

LATE 18TH CENTURY the crossbanded demilune tops decorated sunflower motifs within flower head and ribbon borders, opening to green baize playing surfaces, above friezes outlined with corresponding banded decoration and raised on square tapered legs ending in block feet(2)107cm wide, 72cm high, 52cm deep [closed]Provenance: Paxton House, Berwickshire, and thence by family descent to the present vendorNote: Paxton House was built by Patrick Home between 1759 and 1763, most likely to designs by John and James Adam. When Patrick Home succeeded to the Wedderburn estates in 1766, Paxton was sold to his cousin Ninian Home who undertook completing the interiors. Between 1774 and 1791, Thomas Chippendale and his son were commissioned to furnish the house. With Ninian Home spending most of his time on his plantation in the West Indies, there doesn’t seem to have been any rush to complete the job, with things proceeding at a leisurely pace after the initial phase commenced in 1774. In a letter of instruction to Thomas Chippendale, Ninian requests furniture that is ‘done in a neat but not an expensive manner’. The furniture supplied was generally speaking true to that direction and of a simple and practical nature, unlike the other great Chippendale commission, the grander Dumfries House, to which Paxton is often compared.Paxton now ranks as a major documented Chippendale house. Letters between patron and cabinet-maker cover a span of at least fifteen years. The archive of correspondence between Ninian Home and Haig and Chippendale is an invaluable aid in demonstrating the level of involvement between client and furniture maker, and the extant invoices supplied by Haig and Chippendale offer a rare insight into the costs of such a commission. Since Paxton and Wedderburn have remained in the same family, the Chippendale furniture was left largely in situ, although over the years there has been some interchange of furniture between houses and family members.This pair of satinwood tables were at one time attributed to Thomas Chippendale and displayed for many years at Paxton as such.
