Looff, hand-carved in cypress with a hollow body & separately carved head - turned slightly outwards with the mane carved in the opposing direction, the rump & tail carved in the solid, all 4 legs constructed in segments. The surface decorated overall with remnants of old 'milk paint', raised on an associated iron post through the belly plate within the pole hole, and mounted to an associated wood platform. Measuring 41" high x 43" long x 10" wide. The use of cypress is comparatively far less common than those carousel horses constructed in pine, poplar or basswood.

  An American Glass Inset, Carved and Painted Pine Carousel Horse Attributed to James Sheetz (1851-1923), Circa 1880s appears to retain the original paint and inset swirl glass marble eyes. Height 56 1/2 x width 42 x depth 10 inches; diameter of base 30 inches. Two similar carousel horses attributed to Sheetz are held at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia.
