It was here that she met her future husband and noted portrait painter, Wayman Adams. She exhibited in New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and at the Hoosier Salon in Indiana.

WALTER STEWART, REVOLUTIONARY OFFICER, ALS, 1793 Walter Stewart (1756-1796, Officer in the Continental Army, after the war a merchant in Philadelphia and major General of Militia) ALS, German Town, October 13, 1793, to John Barclay (1749-1824, Revolutionary War soldier, Mayor of Philadelphia, 1791-'3, President of the Bank of Pennsylvania, founded in 1793); 1 1/2 pp. 4to, signed twice by Stewart and apparently docketed by Barclay. Learning that his nephew, who handles his business has fallen ill (presumably with yellow fever which was then epidemic), Stewart asks for some grace from the bank because of large debts coming due at once.

Wayman Elbridge Adams (American, 1883-1959), "Mother and Child", oil on board; 7 3/8" x 7"; signed upper right. In 1904 Adams studied at the John Herron Art Institute under William Forsyth, later taking trips to Italy and Spain to study with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri respectively. An advocate of alla prima painting, Adams painted in the style of Chase and Henri, often completing a portrait in a sitting of three or four hours.

He was born in Glendale, California and earned Bachelor of Education and Masters degrees from the University of California in Los Angeles. He has held the following positions: Professor of Art at the University of California, Los Angeles, 1946 to 1954; Chairman of the Art Department, 1954 to 1957, at the University of Kentucky; Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, 1961 to 1976; Director of the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, 1970 to 1985; and from 1974 to 1990, editor of the Tamarind Papers. He began his career with his primary focus upon painting but was introduced to lithography by Lynton Kistler.
