ARMY OF THE CUMBERLAND 1864 UNION
ARMY OF THE CUMBERLAND 1864 UNION OFFICER LETTERA poignant letter from a Civil War First Officer in the Second Division of the Army of the Cumberland to his Sister. This letter, dated August 9th, 1864, references General William T. Sherman and the Army of the Potomac, while giving a glimpse into the everyday plight of the common soldier. Written just before the final battle of the Atlanta Campaign, which was particularly difficult on the Union Army of the Cumberland, this 1st Officer says "...we have been on the line constantly since the 11th of May have lost good many men and are badly used up in horses." He details the desperate situation of the soldiers, talking about wearing a shirt for months and feeling ill because "My boots are very poor and it is impossible to get any here for any price and being in the trenches when it rains is rather disagreeable." Perhaps most touching is his plea to his sister regarding a younger brother's desire to join the Union cause and fight against the Confederacy. The officer says "I beg of you under no circumstances allow (sic) him to go I don't wish to discourage enlistment but I don't want my Brother to be a Soldier...if he gets in there is no getting out unless by death." Written on a single page of lined paper, folded in half and again into thirds. Overall approx. 10" L x 8" H. Typical condition for age and materials. Some discoloration, folds with pinholes, etc. See images for detail. This item can be shipped in-house.
