OLEN BRYANT, LARGE CERAMIC BUST WITH CLOSED EYESOlen Bryant (American/Tennessee, 1927-2017) large textured ceramic bust with solid base. Incised and sculpted facial features, including closed eyes, hair, and necklace. Brown, black, and white coloring. Signed "O'BRYANT" on base. Includes original label on base, reading "Head of Lady Terra Cotta Clay". 18 1/2" H x 13" W x 8 1/2" D. Biography: Born in Cookeville, TN, Bryant was a 1950 graduate of Murray State University and a 1954 graduate of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield, Michigan with a Master's Degree in Fine Arts. He additionally studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Institute in the Visual Arts in American Culture at the University of Delaware and the Winterthur Museum in 1967. Bryant was a professor at Austin Peay State University from 1964 to 1991. Bryant's artwork is widely collected around the United States and is a part of several museum collections, including the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, the Tennessee State Museum of Art and the Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, and his works have been displayed at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and the Governor's Mansion during the Phil Bredesen administration. He was a founding member of the Nashville Artist Guild and the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (source: Nashville Fine Arts Magazine & The Leaf Chronicle).

RARE & IMPORTANT ERICA DEICHMANN CERAMIC BUSTErica Deichmann ceramic bust dated 1938, signed on bottom. Important piece reminiscent of a native Inuit Canadian. In house shipping is not available on this lot, please contact one of our third party shippers for a quote. Kjeld and Erica Deichmann were the first studio potters in Canada. Their studio was located in New Brunswick. According to Wikipedia: Deichmann pottery was included in the Canadian Handicrafts Guild's group exhibition at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris. Their work was also shown at the British Empire Exhibition in Glasgow in 1938 and the 1939 New York World's Fair. In 1940, representing the province of New Brunswick, they exhibited their work and gave live demonstrations of pottery making at the Montreal Arts and Crafts fair on Saint Helen's Island. In 1946 their work was shown in the League of Canadian Potters show in Toronto, and they exhibited regularly at the Canadian National Exhibition, winning prizes for pottery and glazes. In 1955 the New Brunswick Museum exhibited Twenty years of Ceramics: Retrospective of Deichmann Pottery, and in 1961 the University of New Brunswick Art Centre hosted an exhibition of their porcelain and stoneware. The Canadian Museum of Civilization has a collection of 64 pieces of Deichmann pottery ranging from 1935 to 1963. This collection was the basis of an exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 1991. (1169)
