BRASS MODEL OF THE BELL ROCK
BRASS MODEL OF THE BELL ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
CIRCA 1900 on a rectangular base, unmarked24.2cm high, 10.8cm wide, 16.5cm deepProvenance: Stevenson CollectionThe Bell Rock lighthouse, engineered by Robert Stevenson, was built between 1807 and 1810. The masonry work was to such a high standard that it has not been replaced for over 200 years. It lies in a treacherous stretch of the North Sea, twelve miles east of Dundee. The lighthouse was built on a rock known as the Bell Rock (or Inchcape). According to legend the rock got its name because, in the 14th century, the Abbot of Arbroath had a warning bell installed on the rock, which floating debris, the winds and the sea would act upon to toll the bell and warn mariners of this approaching danger. Soon after installation the bell was carried off by Dutch pirates. The lighthouse had the first revolving light in Scotland. It was de-manned in 1988 and from then it has been remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board headquarters at 84 George Street, Edinburgh. It is still an active lighthouse today. Because of the engineering challenges that were overcome to build the lighthouse, it has been described as one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World.

ANGELO GARINO (ITALIAN 1860-1945)
ANGELO GARINO (ITALIAN 1860-1945)
HALF LENGTH PORTRAIT OF MONA CAIRD Signed, inscribed and dated 'Nice 1918', oil on canvas89cm x 71cm (35in x 28in)Provenance: Henryson-Caird Collection, Cassencarie HouseNote: Mona Caird was born Alice Mona Alison on 24 May, 1854 to an affluent family on the Isle of Wight. Also known by her married name Alice Mona Henryson-Caird, she was a writer and essayist dubbed a ‘priestess of revolt’ by the mainstream press at the time. A notorious First Wave feminist writer, she wrote seven published novels, short stories, a travel book, tracts on anti-vivisection, and many articles on the ‘Woman Question’ and other social and political issues. Her writings challenged Victorian conceptions of femininity, filial duty, marriage and domesticity. In 1877, at the age of 23, Mona married James Alexander Henryson-Caird, who was eight years her senior. His estate, Cassencarie in Kirkcudbrightshire on the South coast of Scotland, figures prominently in her fictional works. Despite clearly being taken with the romantic Gothic mansion and its surrounding idyllic countryside, which provided the setting for a number of her novels, the stifling traditional life that came with it was not to her liking. This resulted in her only spending two months of the year there, while spending the rest in London or travelling abroad mostly on her own, with her husband stayin at Cassencarie to manage the estate. They lived parallel but distinctly different lives, with separate circles of friends that reflected their differing interests and views on specific issues. Their marriage produced a son, Alister James, who was raised mainly in Scotland with his father, and whose subsequent military career was at odds with Mona’s beliefs and writings. Her work stimulated widespread discussion of such controversial subjects as undesired marital sex, birth control, unwanted pregnancy, single motherhood, wages for housework, public child care, free relationships and the right to adultery after marital breakdown. Mona Caird’s importance as an early feminist writer has recently been re-discovered by academics and Feminist scholars and her works provoke ongoing discussion on women’s issues.

FIORE DE HENRIQUEZ ABSTRACT
FIORE DE HENRIQUEZ ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST BRONZEFiore De Henriquez (1921 - 2004) (Mid to 20th Century.)The square base supports a globular pinnacle balancing an abstract composition of blade-like lobes, wings, on opposite sides of an abstracted opening or passageway. The sculpture in rich brown patina is signed Fiore in the casting, top of the base. Willem de Kooning produced similar bronze castings in this same period. The circumstances of her childhood, the difficulties of being born an intersexed person and the larger than life persona of sculptor Fiore de Henriquez have inspired more than a few books, articles and documentaries about her life and art. The titles include Art & Androgyny: The Life of Sculptor Fiore De Henriquez, Fiore In Love With Clay, Cigars Get Feminine Puff and All Woman and Half a Man to name a few. She eventually conquered and embraced the challenges of having been born with both male and female sexual characteristics, and ultimately considered it an opportunity, seeing herself as a rare and unusual individual. As a young woman in facist Italy, she helped evacuate Jewish refugees to safety and claims she escaped an interrogation through the washroom window after fixing her interrogators pancakes. She left Italy in 1949 and in 1953 became a British citizen. Fiore would return to work and exhibit in Rome and later lived in Tuscany until her passing. Throughout her life, and around the world, she received numerous commissions for public installations while she sculpted the likenesses of thousands of people, including celebrities and dignitaries as well as friends and relatives - some who describe her as having a cigar in one hand and whisky in the other during their sitting. It can be said that her abstract expressionist sculptures speak to the challenges she faced. Some seem to portray concealment while others can be seen as expressions of freedom (like the airy winged composition here). Some as themes of struggling with acceptance and others the release of not doing so. There are interpretations of solitude and loneliness or paired heads and conjoined figures, expressions of duality. In her essay on the artist's life, author Jan Short provides poignant insight including the artist's own words, ''The moment I embrace a piece of clay to make a sculpture, I think of how it's going to grow,'' Fiore said. ''Clay is very soft and pliable, so feminine: la creta. It then becomes plaster, more virile and rigid: gesso, that I can carve with a knife. Later it becomes feminine again as la cera, wax, pliable again, with fire this time. Then il bronzo, again masculine, hard. From feminine to masculine, over and again.'' The more one learns about the life and times of Fiore De Henriquez, the more fascinating her works become.Measures 15.5 x 21 x 9 inches and weighs 72 pounds.Very good condition throughout, no damage, repair or wear.

STANDING CANADA GOOSEJerry Mastin
STANDING CANADA GOOSEJerry Mastin (1880-1959)
Portland, OR, 1937
26 in. long
This iconic and peerless rig of geese was initiated by the request of Mastin’s hunting partner, Roger Eaton, for use in harvested wheat fields. The exceedingly refined construction of this rig took too much of Mastin’s time for him to complete the planned dozen in time for hunting season, so the rig began with nine. The numbers dwindled by the time collectors found the rig in 1972. One whole bird and the only feeding head were lost and another neck has been replaced. This attrition brings the maximum known whole birds down to only six. All of the birds were found in repaint with lamp black. This survivor and its handful of rigmates have found new fields of plenty in the eyes of authors, curators, and collectors.
The scarcity of these birds aside, Gerald Rosenthal in the “Great Book” writes, “…the Jerry Mastin Canada geese are among those that stand out, not because of their rarity, but because of the special qualities transferred to the wood by the artistic decoy carver.” It is no wonder Mastin never completed his original concept of a dozen geese as the workmanship in this decoy is among the finest seen in any decoy. The body circumference is thirty inches and it's hollowed as thin as any Nantucket, Delaware River, or Ontario masterwork with no apparent body seam visible. Slight wing separation down the back leads to a raised neck seat for the removable head. A mortise-and-tenon joint is numbered “3” on both sides and is faced in copper. Lastly, two small wooden pegs under the neck slip into the body for secure alignment. The thin neck raises in a sentinel position and flares out an exceptionally well-carved head.
The product of Mastin’s efforts is “Unquestionably, the finest Canada goose decoys made in the west,” write Miller and Hanson, “and perhaps all of North America...” Like many of the history’s greatest makers, including Crowell, Cobb, Schoenheider, and the Dovetailed Maker, Mastin not only rose to the unique challenges of the goose, but also elevated the decoy making craft to a premier level in doing so.
“No piece of carving, other than the geese, is known or needs to be known. Mr. Eaton's geese assure Mastin's place as a master carver.” Gerald Rosenthal “The Great Book of Waterfowl Decoys”
“Unquestionably, the finest Canada goose decoys made in the west, and perhaps all of North America, are the nine field geese carved by Jerry Mastin of Portland, Oregon in 1937.” — Miller and Hanson, "Wildfowl Decoys of the Pacific Coast”
Mix of original and repaint with the rig's black having been removed and even wear. Approximately one inch of mounting flange on underside is reset.

DALE CHIHULY / LARGE 'VENETIAN'
DALE CHIHULY / LARGE 'VENETIAN' VASE (1990)Dale Chihuly
(American, b. 1941)
Venetian , 1990
Hand-blown & applied glass
37" x 11" x 13 1/2"
"Tensions abound in the Venetians. Every attachment seems to indicate flux, a relentless organic force impinging on the physical integrity of the classic form. Hot glass simulates or is affected by natural properties and realities -- its fluidity and the spontaneity of working equates to the mysterious metamorphoses of living organisms, while physical forces of gravity can be utilized or challenged to suggest an independent vitalism. The vegetative and biomorphic decoration and ornamentation of the Venetians seem to both confirm and contradict the laws of nature. The works expand aggressively into space, like a living and growing thing. And like living things, eachwork of the Venetians has an individual character, a personality if you will, much more so than Chihuly's other series." - Ron Glowen, from Dale Chihuly Japan 1990
Chihuly's Venetian series was begun in collaboration with Italian master Lino Tagliapietra, and refined with assistance from Pilchuck artist and leading Chihuly gaffer Richard Royal. The Venetians were initially inspired Art Deco Venetian glass, but later grew more eccentric, with references to a wider variety of European decorative arts including French Art Nouveau forms. The Venetians remain among Dale Chihuly's most vibrant and popular major series.
As is characteristic of the Venetians , Chihuly here has used a symmetrical base and added extravagant organic flourishes. A large composition of four spiraling free-form yellow leaves and a twisting orange coil applied around a cylinder vase with gold foil inclusions. Incised signature and date at the base of the coil.
Also supplied with the lot are six Dale Chihuly books and catalogues:

SONIE JOI RUFFIN "SONS SHALL
SONIE JOI RUFFIN "SONS SHALL RIZE" (2002 QUILT)Sonie Joi Thompson-Ruffin
(Missouri, b. 1951)
Sons Shall Rize , 2002
Silk, African fancy print, Bogolan cloth, metallic threads
60" x 52"
Sons Shall Rize is a significant milestone in Ruffin's celebrated career, as it was her first professionally exhibited quilt, which shortly thereafter was selected to hang in Missouri's state capitol building in Jefferson City. According to an essay published by Pearlie Mae Johnson in her text African American Quilts (2008) which prominently discusses the piece, " Sons Shall Rize refers to African American males who are continuously challenged to rise above the atrocities they face, which are often associated with simply being black." The fabrics, construction, and composition selected for the quilt allude to numerous African ethnic groups, including Asante, Bamana, Fon, and ancient Egypt. Ruffin herself gave additional context for the symbolism present: "The ragged edges means rising from rags, gradually rising to the riches they so deserve. The center is mud-cloth and other fabrics include images of Egyptian kings. [The sun's rays] are African American men rising to the richness... I chose a purple silk cloth because to me it symbolizes royalty."
The work is accompanied by original text entitled "Sons Shall Also Rise: Africa is ancestral, a living document for all mankind," which is pencil-signed and dated. The top bar is outfitted with Velcro as a means of wall-hanging.
