Fine and Rare Chamberlain's Worcester Porcelain Cabinet Figure, second quarter 19th century, depicting a figure of a putto seated in a First Empire-style throne and bearing a white biscuit porcelain wreath in the French taste, the base inscribed on the base, underglaze, "Chamberlain's/Worcester/155 New Bond Street/London/Royal Porcelain Manufactory", the throne gilded in matte and bright finishes and having a ruby-red sear cushion and a matte royal-blue, gold-fringed apron and exterior back, h. 6", w. 4-1/4". Chamberlain's Worcester (active ca. 1786-1852) was famous for its works executed in the French taste in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. See G. He studied art there and in Europe before settling in California in the 1930s where he was employed by the WPA.This composition of a California desert landscape with mountains is unsigned. It is displayed in fine, original carved and gilded American Impressionist frame circa 1930s. It was found with the similarly-framed signed example in this auction and strongly resembles other confirmed examples of Chamberlain's work.Board measures 17.5 x 21.25 with a framed size of 24.5 x 28.5 inches.Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.

Chamberlain taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and lectured on various graphic techniques such as etching, drypoint, and softground etching. His main residence was Marblehead, MA but, in 1929, his address was listed as Rue Jean Dolent; care of Guaranty Trust Co., 3 rue des Italiens, Paris, France and, in 1934, Senlis, France. Chamberlain's education took place at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA; and the Royal College of Art in London. He was a pupil of Edouard Henri Léon (1873-?) in Paris and Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963) in London. Chamberlain was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York City; the Society of American Etchers in Brooklyn, NY; the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; the Chicago Society of Etchers; Associate member of the National Academy of Design, 1939; the Northwest Printmakers; the Société de la Gravure Originale Noir in Paris; and a Guggenheim Fellow, 1926. Exhibitions and awards include an honorable mention at the Paris Salon in 1925; medaille de Bronze at the Paris Salon in 1925; a gold medal at the Boston Tercentenary in 1930; a prize at the Society of American Etchers in 1933; the National Academy of Design, annually; and the Salons of America. Condition:
Overall good condition with some scratching to surface of work, one 2" L, upper center, and one 1 1/2" L, center. Small crease to upper right corner. Examined outside of frame and adhered to a backing.
