PRE-COLUMBIAN CHANCAY POTTERY
PRE-COLUMBIAN CHANCAY POTTERY OLLA POTDESCRIPTION: Pre-Columbian Peruvian Chancay Pottery Olla Pot from central coast of Peru, Chancay culture. Small attractive rounded base olla with two handles in natural beige color and with four brown vertical stripes decorating the body.
The Chancay were a pre-Hispanic archeological civilization that developed between the valleys of Fortaleza, Pativilca, Supe, Huaura, Chancay, Chillón, Rimac and Lurín, on the central coast of Peru. Ceramics were a very common feature of the Chancay culture. This pottery has been found mainly in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valley. The Chancay civilization produced ceramics on a large scale using moulds. However, open vessels with more than 400 different types of drawings that have yet to be decrypted, uniquely created by artisans, have been found. The technique used in creating ceramics was with a rough matt surface that was later painted with a dark colour, usually black or brown, on top of a lighter cream or white background. this dark on light characteristic is known as black on white.

CHANCAY BICHROME VESSEL - FEMALE
CHANCAY BICHROME VESSEL - FEMALE FIGURE HOLDING FRUITPre-Columbian, Chancay culture, Peru, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. Wow! An impressive example of a classic Chancay form, a star gazer, holding a fruit, perhaps a cherimoya - a succulent fruit native to Peru as well as Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chile. Adorned in black and cream pigments, the ancient figure sits with legs drawn up before her as her arms rest on her bulbous belly, just below her pointed breasts with incised nipples and above her elaborately decorated belt. Her eccentric visage displays huge, target-motif eyes, a pointed nose with delineated nostrils, and gently parted lips, all flanked by a pair of petite ears, while 2 breast coverings rest over her shoulders. A conical headdress towers above her, opening at the top to form the mouth of the vessel as it supports the strap of a coca bag that rests on her back just below the vessel's strap-form handle. Size: 7.2" W x 14.4" H (18.3 cm x 36.6 cm)
Such large Chancay figures are usually female. The purpose of such figures is unknown; however, as they have been frequently discovered in Chancay graves, some scholars argue that they may have represented a symbolic female companion to accompany the deceased into the afterworld. This said, a few male/female pairs have been found in gravesites, hence challenging this theory of female companionship.
The Chancay people were exceptional ceramic and textile artisans, and archaeologists have often found cuchimilcos in the tombs of Chancay nobility. Some scholars believe that their outstretched hands were intended to absorb negative energy. Chancay artisans created ceramics that are quite distinctive in form and decoration - finely painted and molded with specific decorative details carefully added by hand as we see in this example.

CHANCAY PAINTED WOOD FIGURE TEXTILE
CHANCAY PAINTED WOOD FIGURE TEXTILE CLOTHINGPre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1425 CE. An anthropomorphic wooden figure with painted details and a hand-woven textile headdress and cape with cords wrapped around his head and torso. The wooden body is comprised of a squat rectangular body and torso that supports the broad head panel - the chin slightly juts over the short neck. The head is carved with facial details such as a protruding nose and deep-set eye sockets, and the eyes and cheeks are painted with red and black pigments to create pupils and tattoos or scarification marks. The cloth wrappings are made from loosely woven cotton and naturally dyed brown and umber hues - the headdress and torso wrapping are one lengthy piece, held in place by knotted cords around the back of the head and around the neck. Due to the dry and arid climate and burial practices, these remarkable pieces made of wood and textile have been well preserved and offer a rare glimpse into the Chancay culture. Size: 3.7" W x 11.75" H (9.4 cm x 29.8 cm); 12.125" H (30.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private California, USA collection

CHANCAY POLYCHROME STANDING
CHANCAY POLYCHROME STANDING FEMALE FIGUREPre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. An endearing female figure comprised of slip painted earthenware, mold made from two pieces and hand painted in hues of russet red and chocolate brown on beige. The figure presents characteristic Chancay traits including an enlarged head with boldly delineated features and a wide-eyed, open-mouthed expression, a grand striped headdress with ear-like forms emerging from either side (as opposed to three perforated points on top more typical of the male examples), and her body positioned with the arms held inward and hands over the chest. This piece was probably once accompanied by a matching male figure, as male-female pairs of painted terracotta figurines have been uncovered from Chancay graves challenging the more accepted notion of sole female companionship into the next world. Size: 5.5" W x 9.5" H (14 cm x 24.1 cm)

A very large bi-chrome earthenware egg-shape bodied effigy vessel with a single strap handle on the back of the neck, the figure's head depicted on the front of the generally cylindrical neck, her visage comprised of bulging, wide open eyes, a protruding straight nose, cup-shaped ears, and tattoo marks on the cheeks, all detailing in chocolate brown over a white ground - all beneath the tumpline around her forehead (connected to a bag hung over her back) and delineated with fine line geometric, textile-inspired patterns. The figure holds a child in both hands which extend from applied slab-made arms, close to her chest as if about to nurse. She dons a belt presenting intricate stylized geometric motifs inspired by Andean textile designs that match those of the tumpline, all in rich chocolate brown pigment on a creamy white ground to enhance the already delightful piece. LARGE CHANCAY WOOD STANDING
LARGE CHANCAY WOOD STANDING FIGURE W/ TEXTILE TUNICPre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, Late Intermediate to Late Horizon, ca. 1100 to 1550 CE. An incredible wood and textile funerary figure of a standing man, the size of a small child, with articulated arms and painted face. The painted head is supported by a flattened body, featuring a minimalist visage comprised of raised, triangular eyes beneath a heavy brow, protruding nose, and a petite mouth cavity. He is outfitted with a miniature woven tunic, pouch, and belt or headband strap made from camelid wool of alpaca or llama. Size: 7" W x 28" H (17.8 cm x 71.1 cm)
Chancay wood carvings are best known for their simple forms and sober visages using wood found in their coastal deserts to create decorative objects such as masks and statues. Scholars believe that such figures and cloth dolls were created to represent mortals rather than supernatural deities or spirits and such figures dressed in textiles are often found in tombs, their purpose is unclear, but it is probable they represented family members or servants to accompany the deceased to the afterlife.
