PAUL MANSHIP (1885-1966) 'CHARITY' BRONZEPaul Howard Manship (after) (New York, 1885-1966) Charity (#2), originally modeled 1955 Bronze 14 1/4" x 11" x 2" A monolith-form bronze with a round relief of angels rejoicing around the sun, around which is the Biblical inscription from 1 Corinthians: "AND NOW ABIDETH FAITH HOPE CHARITY THESE THREE BUT THE GREATEST OF THESE IS CHARITY." In the spandrels are the four beasts of Revelation chapter 4. Marked PM to the bottom of the round relief element, and "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N.Y." to the back base. Green/dark brown patina, a posthumous casting believed by the Manship Artists Residence & Studio in Cape Ann to be authorized by Paul Manship's son John Manship. Marked "P. MANSHIP / ROMAN BRONZE WORKS NY" to the back base. Provenance: A private collection in Texas, thence by a private collection in Massachusetts.
Condition
The bronze is in overall good condition, noting wear including an area of scratches to the back, worn patina to the top of the right side, and a small abrasion near "Abideth." There is a broken marble plinth also present, which could be repaired and reattached if so desired.

CHARLES SYKES "SPIRIT OF ECSTASY" BRONZE, C. 1935 Charles Robinson Sykes,"Spirit of Ecstasy", circa 1935, silvered and gilded cast bronze oversized dealership sculpture depicting the legendary Rolls-Royce hood mascot, signed in mold to right side of base with "SP 1" to the back, on a patinated and gilt circular steel and marble plinth. Note: The "Spirit of Ecstasy" hood mascot was designed in 1911 and was possibly modeled after Eleanor Velasco Thornton (English 1880-1915). Large showroom displays such as this figure were distributed to overseas representatives after the 1931 takeover of the Bentley factory. The "SP 1" could possibly refer to a studio proof.
