A Charleston Coin Silver Presentation Creamer and Sugar Grosjean & Woodward New York act. 1853-1862 ret. Hayden & Whilden (H. Sidney Hayden & William G. Whilden) Charleston SC act. c. 1855-1863; pear-shaped body with lobed neck and cover foliate and floral repoussé and chasing the creamer with North Wind mask spout; engraved presentation inscription "To Dr. Geo. S. Pelzer from the Howard Association of Charleston" weight 38.80 troy ozs. Note: The Howard Association was a mid-19th century benevolent organization which ministered to victims of yellow fever. It was named for the British philanthropist and reformer John Howard (1726-1790) and was active in several Southern port cities including Charleston New Orleans Memphis and Norfolk. Dr. Pelzer was one of several Charleston gentlemen who recorded weather observations to study linkages between weather and diseases particularly yellow fever. The practice began in the late 18th century under the auspices of the Medical Society of South Carolina and later the Charleston Board of Health and continued until approximately 1870. Dr. Pelzer is shown in the Medical Society and Board of Health records as a weather observer from 1859 to 1867 with the home address 371 King Street.
