CHARLESTOWNE, MA POTTERY- JUG,
CHARLESTOWNE, MA POTTERY- JUG, CA. EARLY 1800SThis early American stoneware jug was made by the Charlestowne Pottery in Charlestowne, MA, and probably dates to the first part of the 19th century. The name "CHARLESTOWN" is firmly impressed in block letters near the top of the jug which is glazed with a color called "rust decorated" by the pottery. It stands 9" tall. No other decoration. In excellent condition, no cracks or chips. There are 2 minor glazing problems: There was a chip on bottom rim made pre-glazing; it is now glazed over. On the side is a 2" streak which looks like a dry brush went over the wet glaze removing some of it, leaving a petrified brush mark. Great example of an early Boston area jug.

19TH C. CHARLESTOWN STONEWARE
19TH C. CHARLESTOWN STONEWARE JUG19th century Charlestown stoneware jug with an ovoid body, short bottleneck, and handle. Impressed marks along the side.
Height: 14 1/4 in x diameter: 10 in.
Condition:
Wear throughout the piece; there are some areas with an uneven surface, most likely to be original to the piece. There is a 1/2 inch long loss to the rim; there is a 1/8 inch chip to the rim. There is a circular area- diameter 1 inch- that lost glazing and shows underlying stoneware, possibly original to the piece. Below the neck, there are two losses, each sizing 1 inch and 1/2 inch. Below the losses, there is a black accretion to the surface, smaller than 1/8 inch. Below the "Charlestown" marker, there is a grey accretion that measures 3/4 inch. To the right of the grey accretion, there is an area that lost glazing and shows the underlying stoneware. Below it, there is a network of minute white accretions. Right below it, there are two chips that are discolored dark. To the left of the chips, there is a 1/2 inch long dent to the surface. Towards the foot, there is a 1/2 inch dent. There is an 11 inches long crack that begins from the footrim and that is discolored dark. Below the crack, there is another line of discolored crack, approx. 4 inches long. By the foot rim, there is a network of minute white accretion. Wear to the footrim, consistent with its age and use. White accretion to its underside; there is a crack along the underside that measures 5 inches. The jug does not show a sign of restoration under UV light.
