  GEORGE WAKELING WHIMSEY CHAINAn 11-foot whimsey chain suspended in a chip carved case, sculpted in 1927 by George Wakeling of Windsor, Ontario. The chain is in one piece with a cage at each end, marked Geo Wakeling Dec 1927, and 323 Bridge Ave. Windsor. The frame of the glass case is chip carved and an incised tower in each corner holds a small carved cross. The overall effect of the carved towers and the swagged chain suggest the influence of London's Tower Bridge. Mounted on top of the case is a hand carved plaque describing the work as well as details about the pen knife used to carve this piece and how it travelled with George throughout the First World War. Included is the pen knife, a medal George received for good behaviour as a "Bernardo boy", and a hand-written story and album of George Wakeling's life. The case measures H: 19"; W: 34.25"; D: 9.25". Note: This drawing depicts a post-Civil War mother taking shelter under a tree for the duration of the impending storm where she comforts her two children and their dog. The mother's spreading skirts suggest the stability of her mission a point belied by her and her daughter's anxious expressions which are mirrored by that of the dog.
