Chapu" and with founder's seal on the side, rubbed but probably Ferdinand Barbedienne, h. 36-1/2", w. 10-1/2", d. 10". Provenance: Private collection, Sarasota, Florida. This very famous model was offered in Barbedienne's 1886 catalogue in three sizes, of which this, the second reduction, was the medium size. A history of the figure and its symbolism may be found in Octave Fidiere's biography Chapu: sa Vie et son Oeuvre (Paris: Librarie Plon, 1894), pp. 88-93.
