Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu (French, 1833-1891) "La Jeunesse", fourth quarter 19th century, a patinated bronze after the 1872 model originally executed as a monument to Henri Regnault in the courtyard of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, depicting a young maiden reaching to offer the Golden Bough to the unseen and ascended Regnault, signed, on the upper plinth "H. Chapu" and with founder's seal on the side, rubbed but probably Ferdinand Barbedienne, h. 36-1/2", w. 10-1/2", d. 10". Provenance: Private collection, Sarasota, Florida. This very famous model was offered in Barbedienne's 1886 catalogue in three sizes, of which this, the second reduction, was the medium size. A history of the figure and its symbolism may be found in Octave Fidiere's biography Chapu: sa Vie et son Oeuvre (Paris: Librarie Plon, 1894), pp. 88-93.
