Critchlow & Co. case with figural Colonial type decoration and two John Judson Boynton studio (Clinton, MA) ambrotype images of a husband and wife with a patent date of June 1854, a Littlefield, Parsons & Co. case decorated with the image of a mother, daughter, cat, and dog, and containing an ambrotype image of a woman, and a case decorated with crossed American flags centering on a shield containing the hatched coat of arms of the United States with fasces and phrygian cap, the cases with the images with paper and stamped marks, the remainder having no apparent marks. MIDDLE TN CHERRY SUGAR CHESTMiddle Tennessee sugar chest, cherry primary and poplar secondary wood. Dovetailed locking top case and hinged top with pegged bread board ends, interior with undivided well. Upper dovetailed case rests on a stand with a single dovetailed drawer and wooden pulls. Case supported by tall, elaborate ring turned legs, terminating in ball and spike feet. 35 3/8" H x 23" W x 16 1/2" D. Circa 1830.
Condition:
Refinished. Missing original latch for lock, wooden pulls are later replacements. Left breadboard end on top repaired, minor losses at base corners of dovetailed case. Scattered abrasions and bruising to the dovetailed case with a couple of shrinkage cracks. Some later nails reinforced the dovetailed corners of the case. Drawer sides have a very thin strip applied. Possibility of hinges reset for well.

A GOOD 19TH C. SOUTHERN PLAINS MAN'S HEADDRESS CASEThe rare parfleche case with native tanned fringe and pigment decoration is attributed to the Jicarilla Apache. Cylindrical parfleche cases of this type served as a carrier for a man's ceremonial feathered headdress. The cover thong, sling, lacing and fringe are of Native tanned hide. The period of use is circa 1870. Parfleche envelopes and carrying cases were made by female tribe members.The actual hard parfleche case measures approximately 3 inches across (not perfectly round) and 16 inches in length not counting the fringe. With fringe the overall length is approximately 24 inches.The condition is as shown displaying the effects of age and use, no issues of abuse or actual damage.Provenance: A private inherited collection originating 40-plus years ago in Nebraska.
