See lot 173. This unusual collection of drawings likely all based on photographs includes seven Civil War figures: Major General Winfield Scott Hancock Colonel W.S. Two additional portraits are of Ohio and New York artist William Louis Sonntag (on blue paper) and poet James Russell Lowell (on lined paper). As Lowell was a neighbor of Longfellow and succeeded him as professor of modern languages at Harvard it has been theorized that the ''HWL'' initials were for Longfellow however this cannot as yet be fully substantiated.
