FLORIDA CRARY POTTERY CHICKEN
FLORIDA CRARY POTTERY CHICKEN WATERER 1930SThis is an automatic chicken waterer made in the 1930s by the Crary Pottery in Bluff Springs, Florida. Crary was a small local pottery and existed between 1933-39. How it works: The bottom bowl is filled with water for the chickens. The vase-shaped piece is then placed in the center and filled with water. When the water level in the bowl drops to a certain level, water from the vase can flow by gravity into the bowl and stops when the outlet in the vase is covered with water. Chickens loved them. Both pieces are made from low quality pottery clay, fired. There is no glaze and no apparent damage to the vase reservoir. The base is exceptionally thick and heavy, and has the typical brown Crary glaze covering the part that is underwater, with another band of brown glaze around the rim, extending down the outside. There is a large open crack running across the rim and down the side into the bottom of the bowl- it would no longer hold water. There are also two large chips along the rim. A rare Crary.
