CHIMU BLACKWARE VESSEL W/ AVIAN MOTIFSPre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A mold-formed blackware pottery vessel bearing attractive avian motifs along the upper body. The slightly carinated spherical body presents with a slightly convex but stable base, a pair of thick strap handles, a rounded upper body, and a funnel-form spout with a flared rim. The upper body bears 2 pairs of mold-formed avian panels: one with a bird with its neck facing towards the sky, and the other with a bird holding a petite fish in its mouth. Size: 7.3" W x 6.6" H (18.5 cm x 16.8 cm)

Condition:
Spout reattached to top of vessel's body and small area of rim reattached, both with small chips as well as adhesive and earthen residue along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, handles, and spout, with softening to some mold-formed avian details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.

Front lobe depicts a seated man (lord or shaman) holding his hands on his lap, wearing a long tunic and hat connected by a bridge handle. The man has well-modeled facial features, which are very fine to the touch, including the eyes, nose, mouth, raised rings around the eyes.

A delightful pottery vessel exhibiting a wide hip, a rounded shoulder, a stirrup handle, and a tubular spout, all sitting upon a narrow, convex base. Enveloped in a rich black glaze, the charming vessel is adorned with relief decoration of 4 trios of ovoid fruits hanging from vines that cascade down the sides and meet at the top. A petite monkey additionally embellishes the vessel, sitting where the spout meets the handle. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 10.5" H (16.5 cm x 26.7 cm)

CHIMU BLACKWARE STIRRUP JAR W/ 2 LIZARDS BITING TAILSPre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fabulous, mold-made pottery stirrup vessel presenting a planar base, a spherical body, and a tubular spout, all enveloped in a rich black slip. The body of the ancient vessel is adorned with the relief image of 2 lizards lined head-to-tail horizontally. Each slender reptile exhibits an elongated body with incised stripes, attenuated, bent limbs, and a lengthy tail. Their ovoid heads each show minimalist visages with delineated nostrils and circular eyes. The positioning of the lizards, as though they are biting one another's tail, is reminiscent of the Ouroboros or tail-devouring snake found in many cultures throughout the world. A petite steppe motif additionally embellishes the spout of the lovely vessel. Size: 6" Diameter x 9.5" H (15.2 cm x 24.1 cm)

A fantastic pair of Chimu artifacts: a grayware jar in the form of a figure bound by a coiled snake and a blackware double-chamber, whistle vessel with an anthropomorphic head and zoomorphic relief decoration. Larger of the 2, the grayware dish boasts a voluminous body adorned with the relief of a spiraling snake body, as the flared neck of the vessel displays a human face with sizeable ears and a cylindrical cap. Next, the other vessel is comprised of 2 spherical bodies - 1 surmounted by the head and arms of a figure wearing a biconical headdress and the other with a tubular spout - connected via a stirrup handle and a tunnel. Each side of the chambers is embellished by stippled tondos of crested wave and zoomorphic decoration. Blow into the tubular spout to create a lovely, high-pitched whistle! Size of larger: 5.8" Diameter x 7.8" H (14.7 cm x 19.8 cm)

Condition:
Blackware vessel has been professionally repaired with restoration and repainting over break lines. Small chips to stirrup handle periphery and rim of grayware jar. Both have light surface wear as shown. Otherwise, grayware is intact and blackware still functions as a whistle. Both are very nice with impressive remaining detail.

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE; Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A wonderful blackware effigy vessel of a spondylus shell or urchin, and a mold made stirrup vessel with lizards. The Moche shell vessel rests on a flattened base, the rounded body split into sections the surface studded with petite nubbins pines with vertical ridges that meet at the neck. The other Chimu vessel has a flared foot with a carinated body with low relief lizards across the top, their tails meeting at the center. Although cute, the lizards were important in Moche and Chimu cultures as sources of food and as symbols of regeneration, fertility, and were characters in epic tales and myths.
