- AN AMERICAN PAINTED AND CARVED WOOD
AN AMERICAN PAINTED AND CARVED WOOD CIGAR STORE INDIAN,...AN AMERICAN PAINTED AND CARVED WOOD CIGAR STORE INDIAN, PROBABLY MARYLAND OR DELAWARE, LATE 19TH CENTURY, carved in a standing position with one leg slightly bent and holding a bundle of tobacco leaves over right arm, his intent expression is focused on scouting afar, while wearing a feathered headdress over black shoulder length hair enclosing hexagonal di-pyramid and ball earrings above a simple flat bead necklace, within a short-sleeved top above a cross-hatched belt suspending feathers and a fringed skirt over wrinkled buckskin style pants ending on stylized moccasins, his backside carved with a red painted draping textured cloak cinched at the waist by belt and held at hem with left hand ending on a vertical wood panel back, height (with original angular block wood base): 48 1/2", width: 16", depth: 13". Note: A very similar cigar/tobacco store Indian was sold by Crocker Farm on May 14,2013. The details shared by both Indian figures are numerous and can be found in the hair, facial features, hands, tobacco leaves, how the feathers are carved, the cloak and its' textured surface, the cross-hatched decoration, the moccasins, and the figure's stance as well as the angular base. These unique characteristics have been compared to an unrecorded carver who was known to have worked towards the end of the 19th century in the Baltimore, Maryland and Wilmington, Delaware regions. - LARGE CARVED WOODEN CIGAR STORE INDIAN
LARGE CARVED WOODEN CIGAR STORE INDIAN LIFE SIZEDFor your consideration is this hand carved, solid wood Cigar Store Indian, polychrome painted. The general Cigar Store Indian was first used in 17th century English shops to advertise American tobacco to a still illiterate European population. Historically, these carvings would be placed outside of tobacco outlets, signifying to passerby's that the establishment sold tobacco products. Loosely based on an 1875 carving by Thomas Brooks of New York's Auer Tobacco Company, this contemporary, solid wood carved Cigar Store Indian displays a dark painted Native American Warrior adorned with a full headdress, traditionally known as a trailer war bonnet, accent fringed leggings, moccasins, American flag designed breechcloth, and a knife in sheath situated on his waist belt right hip. The war bonnet also has red, white, and blue coloring. The figure is shown holding a cluster of cigars in his left hand while holding up his right hand and looking into the distance. His neck is wrapped with a badger hide. War bonnets were traditionally worn by male leaders of the tribe who have earned great respect. Originally, a full headdress would have been worn into battle, but now they are used primarily for ceremonial purposes. The piece shows good condition overall, with some light wear. The Cigar Store Indian measures 70.5"H x 24"W x 16"D approximately.*
