RARE 1948 BASEBALL CHESTERFIELD
RARE 1948 BASEBALL CHESTERFIELD CIGARETTE POSTERMeasures 21 x 22 inches. Advertising store display cardboard poster for Chesterfield Cigarettes, issued in 1948, featuring portrait illustrations of baseball's top stars. Proclaiming Chesterfields to be "The Baseball Man's Cigarette," the poster depicts Joe DiMaggio and Bob Elliot, the reigning American League and National League MVPs; Ted Williams, the AL batting champ; Ewell Blackwell, the 1947 NL leader in wins; Bucky Harris, who'd just led the Yankees to another World Championship; and Stan "The Man" Musial. Although this image was featured heavily in the company's print campaign and appeared in magazine ads, this piece -- the actual cardboard store display -- is very rare. This particular example is further distinguished by the fact that it remains in its original issued state, with no professional restoration whatsoever. There are several surface creases, almost all of which can be seen only at certain angles to the light. A tiny spot of facing loss between the E and the R of Chesterfield along the bottom edge. A small, 5/8" tear just above Ted Williams' head. The most notable flaw is the gradual color fade from upper left to lower right. Back appears to have been laid down, with some remnant of what it was attached to remaining. See images. In any case, this is a fabulous and original example of one of the most iconic baseball advertising pieces in the history of the sport. shipping info This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice.
