RARE 1860S AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA
RARE 1860S AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA IRON BLADENorth America, United States, Pennsylvania, Civil War era, ca. 1860s CE. An impressive iron knife blade found near the historic Gettysburg battlefield. The blade is a lengthy and tapered doubled edge, at nearly 11 inches! The integral guard has downturned quillons and a tang that is the ideal length for attaching a grip of wood or leather. Long bowie-like knives were often favored by Confederate troops. While ideal for close combat and formidable to behold, many such weapons were discarded by the soldiers as they were too heavy for longer marches. This piece has developed a rich and dark patina with a pitted surface, as it was exposed to elements for over a hundred years. Size: 15.25" L x 1.35" W (38.7 cm x 3.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-Anchorage, Alaska, USA collection
