The utensils have labels indicating that they were once part of the L.M. Buehler Collection of Gettysburg Battlefield relics. The Buehler collection was part of the Danner Museum started in 1865 by Joel Danner and was the first museum of Gettysburg artifacts.

Early U.S. canteen, round with hand-planed wood and cut nail construction, one side stenciled "U.S." in red, other side with two sets of initials "L+V" and "J.R.", with wooden plug and leather strap, said to be from the War of 1812, 7-1/8 in., 8-1/2 in. with plug. Retains most of its original surface, several small worm holes, some of leather carrying strap later replacement, chips and losses to border.
