PRESENTATION CIVIL WAR DRESS SWORD, PRESENTED TOPrince Felix Constantin Alexander Johann Nepomuk of Salm-Salm (December 25, 1828: August 18, 1870). Prince Felix was a colonel of the 8th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The sword was made by Ames Arms of Chicopee, MA. The sword has an embossed hilt with brass braided shagreen grip. Hinged guard with dedication. The blade is engraved with US and American eagles, flags. Original scabbard, good overall condition. 35 1/4" long in scabbard, 4 1/2" wide at guard. Prince Felix served in the first Schleswig War, the Austro-Sardinian War, the American Civil War, the French intervention in Mexico, and the Franco-Prussian War (KIA). He participated in the Battle of Antietam as well as the Battle of Nashville. After the American Civil War, Prince Felix went to Mexico and served as aide-de-camp to Emperor Maximillian. He was captured and sentenced to death, but given a pardon by President Juarez after his wife Agnes lobbied for his release. He was later killed at the Battle of Gravelotte in the Franco-Prussian War.
