• CIVIL WAR FLAGSTAFF HONORING A
  CIVIL WAR FLAGSTAFF HONORING A BRIGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS HERO Two-part form joined by threaded brass fittings, the lower part terminating in a brass ferrule while the upper end is drilled to accommodate a flagpole ornament, most likely an American eagle; the shaft is fitted with an engraved metal shield reading "Presented by Miss Mabel E. Lord to Joel D. Dudley Camp No. 89 S. of V. From Their Friends July 26, 1889." The subject of remembrance here was Corporal Joel D. Dudley of Brighton, who enlisted on October 17, 1861 in Co. "I," 1st Massachusetts Cavalry and later transferred to Co. "I," 4th Massachusetts Cavalry." Corporal Dudley served nearly he entire war in the saddle, only to be killed in action at High Bridge, Virginia on April 6, 1865, a mere three days before Robert E. Lee surrendered at nearby Appomattox Court House to Ulysses S. Grant. The Sons of Veterans camp bearing Corporal Dudley's name was disbanded as time passed and local interest in remembering the dead ceased. Total length of joined halves 112 in.
