Clyde Connell (American/Louisiana
Clyde Connell (American/Louisiana 1901-1998) "Abstract Composition" c. 1963 oil on masonite signed en verso 48 in. x 18 in. Note: Noted Louisiana artist Clyde Connell (1901-1998) is known for her totemic sculptures imposing wall reliefs and abstract drawings. The four works offered here span roughly 25 years of her career. Making her first serious prints and paintings in the 1950s she became a full-time artist during her sixties. Spending her entire life living within a 50 mile radius of Shreveport she established a studio at her home on Lake Bistineau. Limited financial means combined with inspiration from her local environment inspired Connell to create works out of paper wood and found objects. The two works from the early 1960s offered here are from her early period. The color woodblock's subject and palette are harbingers of her later work and are precursors to these two works from the 1980s which feature distinctive markings and talismanic shapes.
